Fencing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Foil
The men's foil fencing competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing took place on August 13 at the Olympic Green Convention Centre. There were 26 competitors from 21 nations. The event was won by Benjamin Kleibrink of Germany, the nation's first victory in the men's foil. Yuki Ota's silver was Japan's first medal in the event. Salvatore Sanzo of Italy took bronze, becoming the 10th man to win multiple medals in the event. Background This was the 25th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics except 1908 (when there was a foil display only rather than a medal event). Olympic Green Convention Centre
The China National Convention Center, previously known as the Olympic Green Convention Center () is a convention center located in the Olympic Green in Beijing. History It was designed by RMJM and was originally used for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It covers an area of 270,000 square metres. It was one of the four principal buildings of the Olympic Green. The convention center served as the competition spot for the fencing, and the shooting and fencing parts of the modern pentathlon events in the 2008 Summer Olympics and the boccia and wheelchair fencing events at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. He earned an LL.B. in Law and Business from the Interdisciplinary Center, in Herzliya, Israel. Fencing career Or began fencing at the age of eight, fenced at Hapoel Haifa, in Haifa, Israel, and was coached by Ohad Balva and Haim Hatuel. Or won the gold medal at the 1998 Junior World Championship in Valencia, Venezuela, and the silver medal in 1994 in Mexico City, Mexico. He is a 10-time Israel Senior National Champion. Lei Sheng (; born 7 March 1984) is a Chinese left-handed foil fencer, six-time team Asian champion, 2012 individual Asian champion, two-time team world champion, three-time Olympian, and 2012 individual Olympic champion. Career Lei took up fencing because he liked Zorro. His results as a junior were unremarkable. The 2005–06 season saw his breakthrough: he climbed his first World Cup podium with a silver medal at La Coruña, followed by a victory at Espinho and a bronze medal at the Torino World Championships. He finished the season 5th in world rankings. In the following season he won the Bonn World Cup, the St Petersburg Grand Prix and the Montreal World Cup, along with a bronze medal in Venice. Panchan had won nine medals - 5 Golds and 1 Silver in Individual Men's Foil, 2 Golds, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze in the Men's Team Foil event Southeast Asian Games 2001 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2003 in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, 2005 in Manila, Philippines, 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand, 2011 in Palembang, Indonesia, and 2015 in Singapore. Kenta Chida
is a Japanese fencer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he competed in the men's foil, but was defeated in the second round. He won a silver medal in the team foil event. Career Chida's father Kenichi was selected for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, but he could not attend the event due to Japan's boycott of the Games. He however made no attempt to push his son into fencing; Kenta chose the sport for himself during his first year at junior high school. He was originally right handed, but his father suggested that he switch to fencing with his left hand to gain a competitive advantage. Chida began fencing in the senior category in the 2002–03 season, then joined the national team and began training under national coach Oleg Matseichuk. Lau Kwok Kin (; born 17 January 1977) is a fencer from Hong Kong, China who won a bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games and 2010 Asian Games in the men's foil team competition.
