Fencing At The 1988 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1988 Summer Olympics programme. It was the twenty-first appearance of the event. The competition was held from 22 to 23 September 1988. 40 fencers from 18 nations competed. Nations had been limited to three fencers each since 1928. The event was won by defending champion Jean-François Lamour of France, the fourth man to successfully defend an Olympic title in the sabre and the 11th man overall to win multiple medals in the event. It was France's third victory in the event, matching the Soviet Union for second-most all-time (behind Hungary at 11 gold medals). Janusz Olech took silver, Poland's first medal in the event since 1968. Italian Giovanni Scalzo earned bronze. SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium () is an indoor arena, indoor sporting arena located at the Olympic Park, Seoul, Olympic Park in Bangi-dong, Songpa District, Seoul, South Korea. Jean-Marie Banos (born 10 February 1962) is a Canadian former fencer. He competed in the individual and team sabre events at four consecutive Olympic Games between 1984 and 1996. Mike Lofton
Mika'il Sankofa (born Michael Lofton, 10 December 1963 in Montgomery, Alabama) is a sabre fencer and coach. He competed in the individual and team sabre events at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics. Background During his fencing career, Sankofa trained under Tanya Adamovich, Csaba Elthes, Peter Frohlich, Szabo Adrosh, Christian Bauer and Lazlo Szepesi. A graduate of New York University with a BA in Economics, Sankofa is a former publicist who has worked for firms such as Ernst & Young, Grey Advertising, Kirshenbaum, Bond & Partners and Shandwick International. From 1990 - 2009, Sankofa served as co-founder, director of athletics and fencing coach for the Peter Westbrook Foundation. Heorhiy Pohosov
Heorhiy Vadimovich Pohosov (; born 14 July 1960), also known as George Pogosov, is a retired Soviet/ Ukrainian sabre fencer. He won two Olympic medals. Biography Pohosov has a master's degree in physical education with a focus in fencing. He graduated from the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine. His first coach was Mikhail Shimshovich. Pohosov was the coach of the Ukrainian National Team before coming to the US. In 1999, Pohosov came to Stanford University's fencing program. He is the co-head coach for the Stanford men’s and women’s varsity fencing teams as well as the head coach for the Cardinal Fencing Club, Stanford's recreational fencing outlet. In addition to his Olympic medals, his honors include Junior World Champion and six-time World Champion (1983.1985.1986.1987,1989.1990). Steve Mormando (born August 14, 1955) is an American fencer. He competed in the individual and team sabre events at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics. He was the national champion in sabre in 1987. He is also a successful fencing coach, a career which started in 1981. He represented the United States at four Senior World Championships (1985, 1987, 1989 and 1991).
