Fencing At The 1948 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre was one of seven fencing events on the fencing at the 1948 Summer Olympics programme. It was the eleventh appearance of the event. The competition was held from 12 August 1948 to 13 August 1948. 60 fencers from 24 nations competed. Nations were limited to three fencers each. The event was won by Aladár Gerevich, the fifth of nine straight Games in which a Hungarian would win the event. Gerevich became the third man to win multiple medals in the individual sabre, adding to his 1936 bronze. Vincenzo Pinton of Italy took silver and Pál Kovács of Hungary took bronze; it was the third straight Games where the sabre podium was Hungary-Italy-Hungary. The British Empire Exhibition was a colonial exhibition held at Wembley Park, London England from 23 April to 1 November 1924 and from 9 May to 31 October 1925. Background In 1920 the Government of the United Kingdom, British Government decided to site the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Park on the site of the pleasure gardens created by Edward Watkin in the 1890s. Robin Brook
Sir Ralph Ellis "Robin" Brook (19 June 1908 – 25 October 1998) was a British merchant banker and a director of the Bank of England. His wife Helen Brook was founder of the Brook Advisory Centres. As a fencer, he competed at the 1936 and 1948 Summer Olympics. In 1936, he won the sabre title at the British Fencing Championships. The son of a surgeon, Brook was educated, through scholarships, at Eton College and subsequently at King's College, Cambridge, where he studied under Maynard Keynes, earning a double first in Economics. Jacques Lefèvre (fencer)
Jacques Lefèvre (1 February 1928 – 12 January 2024) was a French fencer. At the 1952 Summer Olympics, Lefèvre won a team bronze medal for fencing, as a member of the French Men's Sabre team. He competed for France in the individual and team sabre events at each Summer Olympics from 1948 to 1964. He also competed at the Mediterranean Games in 1951, where he won a gold medal in the individual sabre event and a bronze medal in the team sabre event, and in 1955, where he won a gold medal in the individual sabre event and a silver medal in the team event. Lefèvre died in La Rochelle on 12 January 2024, at the age of 95.
