Fencing At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's Team épée
The men's team épée was one of seven fencing events on the Fencing at the 1924 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fourth appearance of the event. The competition was held from Saturday July 6, 1924, to Tuesday July 9, 1924. 16 teams, composed of 88 fencers, competed. Rosters Each team could have up to eight members. Four were selected for each match. Results Round 1 The top two teams in each pool advanced. Each team played each other team in its pool, unless a match was unnecessary to determine qualification. Each team match included 16 bouts: four fencers from one team faced four fencers from the other team once apiece. Bouts were to two touches. Pool A The Spain vs. Norway match was tied on bouts, 8 to 8, and touches, 19 to 19, so was scored as a draw. Ramón Fonst
Ramón Fonst Segundo (July 31, 1883 – September 9, 1959) was a Cuban fencer who competed in the early 20th century. He was one of the greatest world fencers, individual and by team; he was born and died in Havana. He became the first non-European and the only Latin American to win a title. Biography Although Fonst was born in Cuba, he spent most of his youth in France, where he received his fencing education, and aged just 16 years old he entered the 1900 Summer Olympics which were being held in Paris. Fencing At The 1924 Summer Olympics
At the 1924 Summer Olympics, seven fencing events were contested. A women's event, the individual foil, was held for the first time. Scoring controversy After the games, an Italian and a Hungarian settled a scoring controversy with a real duel. Aldolfo Contronei, described in some sources as a 45-year-old fencing critic for an Italian newspaper and others as the captain of the Italian foil team, fought Giorgio Santelli, the 27-year-old son of the Hungarian Olympic team's coach Italo Santelli. Giorgio Santelli had invoked the Code Duello in order to fight in the place of his 60-year-old father. The duel was fought in the town of Abbazia near the Hungarian border with heavy sabers. The duel was terminated after only two minutes of combat time when Santelli must have landed a tierce of quarte in the side of Contronei's forehead. Fencing
Fencing is a combat sport that features sword fighting. It consists of three primary disciplines: Foil (fencing), foil, épée, and Sabre (fencing), sabre (also spelled ''saber''), each with its own blade and set of rules. Most competitive fencers specialise in one of these disciplines. The modern sport gained prominence near the end of the 19th century, evolving from historical European swordsmanship. The Italian school of swordsmanship, Italian school altered the Historical European martial arts, historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school of fencing, French school later refined that system. Scoring points in a fencing competition is done by making contact with the opponent with one's sword.
