Fast Multipole Method
__NOTOC__ The fast multipole method (FMM) is a numerical technique that was developed to speed up the calculation of long-ranged forces in the ''n''-body problem. It does this by expanding the system Green's function using a multipole expansion, which allows one to group sources that lie close together and treat them as if they are a single source. The FMM has also been applied in accelerating the iterative solver in the method of moments (MOM) as applied to computational electromagnetics problems, and in particular in computational bioelectromagnetism. The FMM was first introduced in this manner by Leslie Greengard and Vladimir Rokhlin Jr. and is based on the multipole expansion of the vector Helmholtz equation. By treating the interactions between far-away basis functions using the FMM, the corresponding matrix elements do not need to be explicitly stored, resulting in a significant reduction in required memory. If the FMM is then applied in a hierarchical manner, it can ...

Lipid Raft
The cell membrane, plasma membranes of cells contain combinations of glycosphingolipids, cholesterol and protein Receptor (biochemistry), receptors organized in glycolipoprotein lipid microdomains termed lipid rafts. Their existence in cellular membranes remains controversial. Indeed, Kervin and Overduin imply that lipid rafts are misconstrued protein islands, which they propose form through a proteolipid code. Nonetheless, it has been proposed that they are specialized membrane microdomains which compartmentalize cellular processes by serving as organising centers for the assembly of signaling molecules, allowing a closer interaction of protein receptors and their effectors to promote kinetically favorable interactions necessary for the signal transduction. Lipid rafts influence membrane fluidity and membrane protein Protein targeting, trafficking, thereby regulating neurotransmission and receptor trafficking. Lipid rafts are more ordered and tightly packed than the surrounding bil ...

The band has won the World Pipe Band Championships 13 times, making it the third most successful competing pipe band in history behind the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band and the Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band. History The band was founded in 1945 in the townland of Drumalig, a few miles from Carryduff on the outskirts of Belfast. A group of farmer’s sons had decided to form a band and name it after Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. Fort Morgan Municipal Airport
Fort Morgan Municipal Airport is six miles north of Fort Morgan, in Morgan County, Colorado, United States. The airport is in the city limits in a detached section of the city. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a ''general aviation'' facility. Many U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, but this airport is FMM to the FAA and has no IATA code (Memmingen Airport in Memmingen, Germany has IATA code FMM). Facilities The airport covers 324 acres (131 ha) at an elevation of 4,569 feet (1,393 m). It has three runways: 14/32 is 5,219 by 60 feet (1,591 x 18 m) concrete; 17/35 is 3,800 by 30 feet (1,158 x 9 m) dirt/turf; 8/26 is 2,467 by 100 feet (752 x 30 m) turf. In 2011 the airport had 9,543 aircraft operations, average 26 per day: 90% general aviation, 8% air taxi, and 2% military. 23 aircraft were then based at this airport: 96% single-engine and 4% multi-engine. Rigorous Coupled-wave Analysis
Rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA), also known as Fourier modal method (FMM), is a semi-analytical method in computational electromagnetics that is most typically applied to solve scattering from periodic dielectric structures. It is a Fourier-space method so devices and fields are represented as a sum of spatial harmonics. Description The method is based on Floquet's theorem that the solutions of periodic differential equations can be expanded with Floquet functions (or sometimes referred as a Bloch wave, especially in the solid-state physics community). A device is divided into layers that are each uniform in the z direction. A staircase approximation is needed for curved devices with properties such as dielectric permittivity graded along the z-direction. Electromagnetic modes in each layer are calculated and analytically propagated through the layers. The overall problem is solved by matching boundary conditions at each of the interfaces between the layers using a t ...
