Slalom Skiing
Slalom is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. These are spaced more closely than those in giant slalom, super giant slalom and downhill, necessitating quicker and shorter turns. Marcus Sandell (born 23 September 1987 in Espoo) is a Finnish alpine skier. He represented Finland at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He suffered serious injury on 28 September 2009 on the training session in nearby Pitztaler glacier, Austria. Due to the crash, his kidney had to be removed at the hospital in Innsbruck. Benjamin Raich (born 28 February 1978 in Arzl im Pitztal, Tyrol) is an Austrian former World Cup champion alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist. Jens Byggmark
Jens Byggmark (born 22 August 1985) is a Swedish former World Cup alpine ski racer who specialised in the technical events of slalom and giant slalom. Byggmark was born in Örebro but was raised in Tärnaby. He raced for Tärna IK Fjällvinden, the world's most successful ski club. He made his debut in the European Cup in 2005. Byggmark has Sámi roots on his mother's side. He has two children, a daughter and a son, together with his wife, Michaela Delér. World Cup Byggmark made his World Cup debut in 2005, and has won two slalom events, both during the 2007 season, on successive days at Kitzbühel, Austria. Thomas Grandi (born 27 December 1972 in Bolzano, Italy) is a Canadian retired alpine skier. He specialized in technical skiing giant slalom and slalom. Skiing career Grandi started in the Alpine Skiing World Cup in the 1992-93 season. His first top ten finish in the World Cup came in December 1996 where he finished in 10th position in the Giant Slalom in Alta Badia, Italy. In the 1997-98 World Cup season, he had his first top three finish when he finished in third place in a Giant Slalom race in Park City. Grandi's first wins in the World Cup both came in December 2004, when he won Giant Slaloms in Alta Badia and Flachau. The victory at Alta Badia made Grandi the first Canadian male skier to win a World Cup technical race. Truls Ove Karlsen (born 25 April 1975 in Oslo) is a retired Norwegian alpine skier. He made his Alpine Skiing World Cup debut in Sölden in 2001. He made a total of 143 World Cup starts, finishing third in a slalom in Sestriere in December 2002 and scoring his only World Cup win in a slalom in Kranjska Gora in February 2004, leading home team-mate Tom Stiansen in a Norwegian one-two ahead of Austrian Mario Matt. His best World Cup seasons were 2003 and 2004, where he finished eighth in the slalom standings.
