F-Spot
F-Spot is a discontinued image organizer, that was designed to provide personal photo management for the GNOME desktop environment. The name is a play on the word F-Stop. F-Spot can be used for basic photo editing and management. History The F-Spot project was started by Ettore Perazzoli and was maintained by Stephen Shaw. F-Spot is written in the C# programming language using Mono. Before its discontinuation in 2017, F-Spot was the standard image tool for several GNOME based distributions. Before that, Fedora replaced F-Spot with Shotwell in Fedora 13. Ubuntu also replaced it with Shotwell in 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. Features F-Spot aimed to have an interface that is simple to use but also facilitates advanced features such as tagging images, and displaying and exporting image metadata in Exif and XMP formats. Shotwell (software)
Shotwell is an image organizer designed to provide personal photo management for the GNOME desktop environment. In 2010, it replaced F-Spot as the standard image tool for several GNOME-based Linux distributions, including Fedora in version 13 and Ubuntu in its 10.10 Maverick Meerkat release. In 2019, Shotwell was the target of a predatory lawsuit by Rothschild Patent Imaging against the GNOME Foundation claiming a patent infringement related to the use of WiFi to transfer photographic images. The case was resolved through agreement in 2020 and the patent itself invalidated in 2022 following a legal challenge from the open source development community. Ettore Perazzoli
Ettore Perazzoli (June 15, 1974 – December 10, 2003) was an Italian free software developer. Biography Born in Milan, he studied Engineering at the Polytechnic University. He wrote a port of x64, a Commodore 64 emulator for Unix, to DOS, thus turning it into a cross-platform emulator, which was renamed to VICE. He has been a maintainer of VICE for many years, and started the Microsoft Windows port, which is now the most popular version of VICE. He then started contributing to GNOME, a Linux desktop environment. He helped in writing GtkHTML, Nautilus and Evolution. Close friend of Nat Friedman and Miguel de Icaza, he was invited by them to work for the company they founded, Ximian. The Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is an ISO standard, originally created by Adobe Systems Inc., for the creation, processing and interchange of standardized and custom metadata for digital documents and data sets. An image file format is a file format for a digital image. There are many formats that can be used, such as JPEG, PNG, and GIF. Most formats up until 2022 were for storing 2D images, not 3D ones. The data stored in an image file format may be compressed or uncompressed. If the data is compressed, it may be done so using lossy compression or lossless compression.
