Electoral District Of Rockhampton North
Rockhampton North was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1888 to 1912, and from 1960 to 1992. It was based on the northern area of Rockhampton. In both incarnations, it was replaced by the district of Keppel. Rockhampton North was generally a safe seat for the Labor Party. It was one of the eleven seats held by Labor in their "cricket team" caucus after the 1974 election, their worst defeat until 2012. North Rockhampton is the common name for the suburbs of Rockhampton located on the north-east side of the Fitzroy River (Queensland), Fitzroy River in Queensland, Australia. It may also refer more specifically to the location of the North Rockhampton railway station or the former Town of North Rockhampton. Henry Turner (Queensland Politician)
Henry Turner (10 November 1844 – 9 August 1932) was a member of both the Queensland Legislative Council and the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Turner was born in November 1844 at Aynho, Northamptonshire, England to Thomas Turner and his wife Leah (née Fathers). He was apprenticed in a plant nursery and then worked as a gardener. Robert Schwarten
Robert Evan Schwarten (born 6 October 1954) is an Australian politician. Early life Schwarten was born in Rockhampton, and is married with two sons. Before his entry into politics, he was a teacher and a ministerial advisor to the Deputy Premier. Political career From 1985 to 1991 he was an alderman on Rockhampton City Council. A member of the Labor Party, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in 1989 as the member for Rockhampton North, but was defeated in 1992. In 1995 he was reelected to parliament, this time as the member for Rockhampton. He was Minister for Public Works and Information and Communication Technology in Anna Bligh's Labor Government. He held the Public Works portfolio from 1998 to 2011. Schwarten stood down from Parliament and was replaced by Bill Byrne, who held the seat for Labor. Les Yewdale
Leslie John "Les" Yewdale (30 April 1928 – 1 January 1999) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Yewdale was born in Rockhampton to Arthur Edward Yewdale and Maude Anne, ''née'' Walsh. He attended state schools in Berserker and Rockhampton before graduating from Christian Brothers College. Working variously as a meatworker, station hand, tradesman's assistant, builder's labourer and waterside worker, he became secretary of the Rockhampton Trades and Labour Council in 1959, holding the position until 1972. Merv Thackeray
Mervyn Herbert (Merv) Thackeray (20 October 1925 – 7 June 2014) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1957 until 1972, representing Keppel (1957–1960) and Rockhampton North (1960–1972). He was disendorsed in January 1972 and ran unsuccessfully as an independent at the 1972 state election. Thackeray was born in Mackay and educated at Mackay Primary School. He had a career as a grazier and on the railways before entering politics, working variously as engine driver, fireman, engine cleaner and union delegate. He entered politics at the 1957 election immediately following the Labor split of that year, defeating Labor defector and Queensland Labor Party candidate Viv Cooper on behalf of official Labor in the seat of Keppel. Liberal Party (Queensland, 1908)
The Liberal Party was a political party in the Australian state of Queensland in the early 20th century. It combined the main non-Labor forces, the "Kidstonites" of William Kidston and the Conservatives of Robert Philp, similar to the federal Commonwealth Liberal Party whose fusion it preceded. The Liberals held government from their formation in 1908 until defeat in 1915 after which they combined with other elements in the state to form the National Party. Kidstonites
The Kidstonites or Kidston party were a political party in the Australian state of Queensland in 1907 to 1908, formed by William Kidston. The party resulted from a split in the Queensland Labor Party and spent most of its existence in government, before merging with the conservative faction of Robert Philp in October 1908, to form the Liberal Party. History In 1903, Queensland's long-running Continuous Ministry fell and was replaced by a coalition of liberals and Labor. The government was headed by Arthur Morgan and included two Labor members, though not the party leaders. In 1906, Morgan was succeeded as Premier by William Kidston, one of the Labor members of the government. James Brennan (25 February 1837 - 13 June 1917) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Brennan was born at Paisley, Scotland, the son of James Brennan Snr and his wife Jane (née Cruikshank). He was educated in Paisley and he arrived in Australia sometime before 1864 and took up mining at Gympie. He was an employee at the Queensland Meat Export and Agriculture Co. in Brisbane and Townsville, and from 1902 was the manager at the Lake's Creek Meatworks in Rockhampton. John Linnett (politician)
John (Jack) Linnett (1859 – 16 May 1902) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was born at Essex, England, the son of William Linnett and his wife Rachel (née Cook). Linnett arrived in Rockhampton on the Southern Belle on 6 March 1874. On arrival, he trained as a butcher and remained in the industry all his life. On 25 August 1887, he married Ellen Conner in Rockhampton. He died there in May 1902 and his funeral proceeded from his former residence to the North Rockhampton Cemetery. Public life Linnett, a Ministerialist, contested the 1901 by-election for the seat of Rockhampton North in June 1901 to replace James Stewart, who had moved to the Australian Senate. James Stewart (Australian Politician)
James Charles Stewart (7 September 1850 – 20 December 1931) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and later the Australian Senate. Early life Born in Grantown-on-Spey, Morayshire, he received a primary education after which he worked as a farm and railway worker. In 1888 he migrated to Australia, where he became involved in the unions movement. He edited the ''People's Newspaper'' in Rockhampton in Queensland.
