The Cincinnati City Council is the lawmaking body of Cincinnati, Ohio. The nine-member city council is elected at-large in a single election in which each voter chooses nine candidates from the field. The nine top vote-getters win seats on the council for a four-year term. Until the charter of 1925, the council comprised 32 members—six elected at-large and 26 elected from single-member wards. The 1925 charter instituted the present nine-member council elected in a single non-partisan, at-large election. From 1925 to 1955, elections were under the single transferable vote form of proportional representation. The mayor was chosen by the council from among its members. In the 1970s, the system was changed so that the top vote-getter in the council election automatically became mayor. Since 2001, the mayor is chosen in a separate election. Dwight Tillery
Dwight Tillery is an American politician of the Democratic Party who is active in local politics of Cincinnati, Ohio and served as the city's mayor from 1991 to 1993. Tillery grew up in the city's West End and attended the University of Cincinnati in the 1960s, where he helped found the university's United Black Association and graduated with a degree in political science. He also holds a J.D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School. Tillery served as mayor of Cincinnati from 1991 to 1993, the city's second African-American mayor. He briefly ran for the Democratic nomination for Congress in 1992 before dropping out of the race in order to focus on his mayoral duties. He was a member of the Cincinnati City Council for many years, until 1998, when term limits forced his retirement. Chris Seelbach (politician)
Christopher Steven Seelbach (born November 14, 1979) is an American politician. He made history in 2011 when he became the first openly gay politician elected to the Cincinnati City Council. On May 20, 2013 the White House named Seelbach a national Harvey Milk "Champion of Change" for his commitment to equality and public service. College and early career Seelbach was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He moved to Cincinnati in 1998. After founding the first gay-straight alliance at Xavier University, he graduated from the university with a degree in business administration and attended law school at the University of Dayton. While in law school, he worked on the council staff of Vice-Mayor David Crowley, with whom he became friends, and was employed by Crowley's 2005 re-election campaign. Reginald Allen Harris (born August 12, 1968) is an American former professional baseball middle relief pitcher, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Oakland Athletics (1990–91), Boston Red Sox (1996), Philadelphia Phillies (1997), Houston Astros (1998), and Milwaukee Brewers (1999). Ohio's 1st congressional district is represented by Republican Steve Chabot. This district includes the western four-fifths of Cincinnati, and borders both Kentucky and Indiana. This district was once represented by President William Henry Harrison. Since redistricting in 2010, the district was widely seen as heavily gerrymandered by state Republicans to protect the incumbent, Steve Chabot. However, Chabot lost the seat in 2022 to Democrat Greg Landsman. The new district includes all of Warren County, a much more heavily Republican area. Previous iterations of the district did not include Warren County. Gregory John Landsman (born December 4, 1976) is an American politician and former educator from Ohio serving as the U.S. representative for since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Landsman served on the Cincinnati City Council from 2018 to 2022. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives from , defeating 13-term incumbent Steve Chabot in the 2022 election. Early life and education Landsman was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio to a Jewish family. He earned a bachelor's degree in economic and political science from Ohio University in 1999 and a master's degree in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School in 2004.
