Edward Thorne (naval Officer)
Rear Admiral Edward Courtney "Ted" Thorne, (29 October 1923 – 23 October 2013) was a senior Royal New Zealand Navy officer. He rose to be Chief of Naval Staff and later served as the Commissioner of the New Zealand Fire Service. Biography Thorne was born in Seatoun, Wellington, on 29 October 1923 and was educated at Rongotai College from 1935 to 1938, followed by Nelson College from 1938 to 1941.''Nelson College Old Boys' Register, 1856–2006'', 6th edition After leaving school, he travelled to England, becoming a cadet at Dartmouth. Seatoun
Seatoun, an eastern suburb of Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, lies on the east coast of the Miramar Peninsula, close to the entrance to Wellington Harbour ( Port Nicholson), some seven kilometres southeast of the CBD. The suburb sits on an exposed promontory close to Barrett Reef, a dangerous area of rocky shallows upon which many ships have foundered, most notably the inter-island ferry in 1968. Europeans first settled the suburb in 1889. The name ''Seatoun'' comes from a locality in Forfarshire, Scotland linked with the family history of Coutts Crawford, the suburb's founder. Seatoun as a suburb looks out on to Steeple Rock, which is the largest rock of Barrett Reef at the west of the entrance to Wellington Harbour, rising above sea level. Its Māori name is Te Aroaro-o-Kupe (The front of Kupe), after being officially changed on 3 September 2009 from Te Ure-o-Kupe (The penis of Kupe). Waiouru Military Camp
Waiouru Military Camp is a camp of the New Zealand Army in the central North Island of New Zealand near Waiouru. All New Zealand Army soldiers complete their initial basic training, the All Arms Recruit Course (AARC), at Waiouru Military Camp. The camp is also the site of the army marae. The marae is the home of ''Ngati Tumatauenga'', literally 'the tribe of the God of War', the Māori phrase for the New Zealand Army. Military camp The New Zealand government chose the sheep station at Waiouru as the location of a North Island training area for its Territorial Forces in the 1930s. The sheep station had large areas of inexpensive open land, and existing road and rail access to the North Island coastline. The artillery was the first branch of the New Zealand Army to use Waiouru.
