Education In The Isle Of Man
Education in the Isle of Man is compulsory for children aged between 5 and 16. As a Crown dependency the Isle of Man parliament and government have competence over all domestic matters, including education; however the structure and curriculum are broadly in line with that of UK schools and particularly the English national curriculum. Education is overseen by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture and regulated by the Isle of Man Education Act 2001. As of September 2017 there were 6,492 pupils in primary schools, and 5,218 pupils in secondary education. History Before 1675 there were no schools in the Isle of Man and any education was provided by the church. The Department of Education, Sport and Culture (''Rheynn Ynsee Spoyrt as Cultoor'') is a department of the Isle of Man Government. The department was formerly the Department of Education and Children and was renamed as the Department of Education, Sport and Culture under Statutory Document No. 2017/0325 with effect from November 2017. The ''Board of Education for the Isle of Man'' was established as a Board of Tynwald in 1872, and renamed the ''Council of Education'' in 1899. Key Stage 4 (KS4) is the legal term for the two years of school education which incorporate GCSEs, and other examinations, in maintained schools in England normally known as Year 10 and Year 11, when pupils are aged between 14 and 16 by August 31. Culture Vannin is the trading name for the Manx Heritage Foundation, established in 1982 by the Isle of Man Government to promote Manx culture, heritage and language. The Centre for Manx Studies ( gv, Laare-Studeyrys Manninagh) is a department of the School of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology in the University of Liverpool whose focus is the study of the Isle of Man, the Manx language, and Manx culture and history. The Buchan School
The Buchan School ( gv, Yn Scoill Buchan) is an independent primary school in the south of the Isle of Man, catering for children aged 3–11. It is the junior school of King William's College. History The Buchan School was established by Lady Laura Buchan in the 1875 as a "school for females" and was originally known as The High School for Girls. The original campus was located on Douglas Road, on the promenade in Castletown, however the school soon out-grew its original site and moved to a new site named "Westhill" about a mile away. King William's College (nicknamed KWC or King Bill's; gv, Colleish Ree Illiam) is an independent school for pupils aged 3 to 18, located near Castletown on the Isle of Man. It is a member of the International Baccalaureate and Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference organisations. The College operates at two sites in or near Castletown: a main senior school campus on the shore of Castletown Bay, and a prep school (called The Buchan School) in the Westhill part of Castletown, two miles from the main campus.
