Earl Temple of Stowe, in the County of Buckingham, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1822 for Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 2nd Marquess of Buckingham, who was created Marquess of Chandos and Duke of Buckingham and Chandos at the same time. In contrast to the Marquessate and Dukedom, which were created with remainder to the heirs male of his body only, the Earldom was created with remainder to (1) the heirs male of his body, failing which to (2) the heirs male of his deceased great-grandmother the 1st Countess Temple, failing which to (3) his granddaughter Lady Anna Grenville (daughter of Richard, Earl Temple, later 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos) and the heirs male of her body, and then to possible younger daughters of Lord Temple and the heirs male of their bodies (there were, in the event, no other daughters). Earl of Arran is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It is not to be confused with the title Earl of Arran in the Peerage of Scotland. The two titles refer to different places: the Aran Islands in Ireland, and the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The Irish earldom is held by the Gore family. The Scottish earldom is a separate title, held as a subsidiary title of the Duke of Hamilton. Irish creations The first Irish creation came in 1662 when Lord Richard Butler, younger son of The 1st Duke of Ormond, was created Baron Butler of Cloughgrenan, Viscount Tullough and Earl of Arran. Walter Grenville Algernon Temple-Gore-Langton, 8th Earl Temple of Stowe (2 October 1924 – 17 September 2013) was a British peer, a member of the House of Lords from 1988 until 1999. The son of Lt.-Commander the Hon. Evelyn Arthur Grenville Temple-Gore-Langton and his wife Irene Maria Gartside-Spaight, he was educated at the Nautical College, Pangbourne. In 1988 he succeeded as Earl Temple of Stowe. Algernon William Stephen Temple-Gore-Langton, 5th Earl Temple of Stowe (9 November 1871 – 19 February 1940) was an English soldier, diplomat, and peer, with a seat in the House of Lords from 1902 until his death. The son of William Temple-Gore-Langton, 4th Earl Temple of Stowe and his wife Helen Mabel Graham-Montgomery, he was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated BA in 1896. He was then commissioned into the Coldstream Guards and was later a Captain in the 3rd Battalion the Somerset Light Infantry. He joined the Diplomatic Service and on 28 March 1902 succeeded his father as Earl Temple of Stowe in the peerage of the United Kingdom. Richard Plantagenet Campbell Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (10 September 1823 – 26 March 1889), styled Earl Temple until 1839 and Marquess of Chandos from 1839 to 1861, was a British soldier, politician and administrator of the 19th century. He was a close friend and subordinate of Benjamin Disraeli and served as the Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1867 to 1868 and Governor of Madras from 1875 to 1880. Buckingham was the only son of Richard Temple-Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, and was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. Richard Plantagenet Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, (11 February 1797 – 29 July 1861), styled Viscount Cobham from birth until 1813, Earl Temple between 1813 and 1822 and Marquess of Chandos between 1822 and 1839, was a British Tory (political faction), Tory politician. He served as Lord Privy Seal between 1841 and 1842. Stowe House
Stowe House is a grade I listed country house in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, England. It is the home of Stowe School, an independent school and is owned by the Stowe House Preservation Trust who have to date (March 2013) spent more than £25m on the restoration of the house. Stowe House is regularly open to the public. The gardens (known as Stowe Gardens, formerly Stowe Landscape Gardens), are a significant example of the English garden style, and, along with part of the Park, passed into the ownership of the National Trust in 1989. The parkland surrounding the gardens is open 365 days a year. National Trust members have free access to the gardens but there is a charge for all visitors to the house which goes towards the costs of restoring the building.
