Expansion Of The Australian Football League
The Australian Football League, currently an 18 team competition, has a history of expansion since 1908 when its 8 club competition, formed as an 1897 breakaway from the rival Victorian Football Association, grew to 10 teams. Many clubs have been proposed since this time, particularly since the 1980s when the league began to expand nationally. Only 3 teams have left the competition in its history. The AFL Commission controls the competition's expansion licenses. Its most recently granted licenses occurred during the league's nationalisation. The 19th license has been awarded to the Tasmania Devils Football Club in 2023 (to enter the league in 2028). The private ownership model for licenses was more common in the 1980s however most clubs being run under a membership model. As of 2024, 5 of the expansion franchises are now either directly controlled by or owned by the league. The Western Bulldogs are a professional Australian rules football club based in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray. The 1921 Victorian Football Association season was the 43rd season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Williamstown Football Club, after it came from fourth on the home-and-home ladder to defeat minor premiers by 18 points in the Grand Final, played very late in the year on 22 October. The West Melbourne Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The 1908 Victorian Football Association season was the 32nd season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Footscray Football Club, after it defeated Brunswick in the final by 24 points. It was the fourth premiership won by the club. The Motordrome, also known as the Olympic Park Speedway, the Melbourne Speedway or the Victorian Speedway, was a former speedway and Australian rules football ground located approximately on the site of the present day Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Olympic Park in Melbourne, Victoria.
