Exercises In Futility (Mgła Album)
''Exercises in Futility'' is the third studio album by Polish black metal band Mgła. It was released on 4 September 2015, through Northern Heritage Records. Featuring "a raw, melodic black metal" style that was compared to those of Watain and early Burzum, the album is regarded as "the biggest and most impactful release of the band's 15-year career." The front cover features an artwork from French engraver Marcel Roux, titled ''L'aveugle'' ("The blind", 1908). The band embarked a North American tour following the album's release. Critical reception ''Exercises in Futility'' was met with positive responses. Andy O'Connor of Pitchfork praised the album, stating, "Mgła are the true heirs to Dissection's style of black metal; the melodies are huge without dipping into the saccharine." Mgła (; ; ) is a Polish black metal band from Kraków, formed in 2000. The duo consists of vocalist, guitarist and bassist M. (Mikołaj Żentara) and drummer Darkside (Maciej Kowalski). The band has released four albums and began performing live in 2012, featuring a touring guitarist and bassist. History Initially founded as a studio project in 2000 in Kraków by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mikołaj "M." Żentara with the collaboration of drummer Dariusz "Daren" Piper, both originally from the band Kriegsmaschine. Together, the duo recorded two unreleased demos, their first 2 EPs and a split album ''Crushing the Holy Trinity'' with the bands Deathspell Omega, Clandestine Blaze, Exordium and Musta Surma. Black metal is an extreme metal, extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Burzum
Burzum (; ) is a Norwegian music project founded by former Mayhem member Varg Vikernes in 1991. Although Burzum never played live performances, it became a staple of the early Norwegian black metal scene and is considered one of the most influential acts in black metal's history. The word "burzum" means "darkness" in the Black Speech, a fictional language crafted by ''The Lord of the Rings'' writer J. R. R. Tolkien. Burzum's lyrics and imagery are often inspired by fantasy and Norse mythology. Vikernes founded Burzum in 1991 and recorded the first four Burzum albums between January 1992 and March 1993. From 1994 to 2009, Vikernes was imprisoned for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth and the arson of eight churches. While imprisoned, he recorded two dark ambient albums using only synthesizers, as he had no access to drums, guitar, or bass. Dissection (band)
Dissection was a Swedish extreme metal band from Strömstad, formed in 1989 by guitarist, vocalist, and main songwriter Jon Nödtveidt and bassist Peter Palmdahl. Despite several lineup changes, Dissection released ''The Somberlain'' in 1993 and ''Storm of the Light's Bane'' in 1995 before splitting up in 1997 due to Nödtveidt's imprisonment for complicity in the Keillers Park murder, murder of Josef Meddour. After his release, Nödtveidt reformed the band in 2004 with new members whom he felt could "stand behind and live up to the demands of Dissection's Satanism, Satanic concept." They released their third and final full-length album, ''Reinkaos'', in April 2006 before disbanding that June. Nödtveidt said he had "reached the limitations of music as a tool for expressing what I want to express, for myself and the handful of others that I care about."
