European Committee Of The Regions
The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is the European Union's (EU) assembly of local and regional representatives that provides sub-national authorities (i.e. regions, counties, provinces, municipalities and cities) with a direct voice within the EU's institutional framework. Established in 1994, the CoR was set up to address two main issues. First, about three quarters of EU legislation is implemented at local or regional level, so local and regional representatives needed to have a say in the development of new EU laws. Second, there were concerns about a widening gap between the public and the process of European integration; involving the elected level of government closest to the citizens was one way of closing the gap. Delors Building
The Jacques Delors building is an office building in the Brussels and the European Union#European Quarter, European Quarter of Brussels, Belgium, which houses the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions. It is located at 99–101, Rue Belliard, rue Belliard/Belliardstraat, next to Leopold Park, and was formerly called the Belliard building. The building housed the Brussels activities of the European Parliament until the 1990s, when these functions were moved to the new Espace Léopold. In the 2000s, it was renovated for use by the two Committees. In 2006, it was renamed the Jacques Delors building (abbreviated 'JDE'), after Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission, who was the most prominent founder of the Committee of the Regions. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the two legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. The Parliament is composed of 720 members (MEPs), after the June 2024 European elections, from a previous 705 MEPs. It represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world (after the Parliament of India), with an electorate of around 375 million eligible voters in 2024. Markku Antero Markkula (born July 15, 1950, in Kolari, Finland) is a Finnish politician and the First Vice-president of the European Committee of the Regions. A member of Finland's Espoo City Council since 1980 - where he was president from 1990 to 1992 and again in 2010 - Markkula is a member of the Board of the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council and has been Chairman of the Espoo City Planning Board since 2004. The German-speaking Community (, , DG), also known as East Belgium ( ), is one of the three Communities, regions and language areas of Belgium, federal communities of Belgium. The community is composed of nine municipalities in Liège Province, Wallonia, within the Eupen-Malmedy region in Eastern Belgium. European People's Party
The European People's Party (EPP) is a European political party with Christian democracy, Christian democratic, liberal conservatism, liberal-conservative, and conservative member parties. A transnational organisation, it is composed of other political parties. Apostolos G. Tzitzikostas (, ; born 2 September 1978) is a Greek politician who served as governor of the region of Central Macedonia from 2013 to 2024 and was formerly President of the European Committee of the Regions from 2020 until 2022.
