The European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation is a member of the European Commission. The portfolio was previously titled ''European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport'' until 2019 when it was merged with the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation to form its current title. History of the portfolio Commissioner Ján Figeľ was approved by the European Parliament in 2004 as the ''European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism''. This was enlarged since the Prodi Commission with the addition of ''training'' and ''multilingualism'' (The Directorate-General is still just Directorate-General for Education and Culture). However, when Romania joined the European Union on 1 January 2007, responsibility for multilingualism was handed over to the new Romanian commissioner, Leonard Orban. Ekaterina Spasova Gecheva-Zaharieva (, born 8 August 1975) is a Bulgarian politician serving as European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation. She served as Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 2017 to 2021 and on two occasions from 2013 to 2014. European Higher Education Area
The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) was launched in March 2010, during the Budapest-Vienna Ministerial Conference, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Bologna Process. As the main objective of the Bologna Process since its inception in 1999, the EHEA was meant to ensure more comparable, compatible and coherent higher education systems in Europe. Between 1999 and 2010, all the efforts of the Bologna Process members were targeted to creating the European Higher Education Area, which became reality with the Budapest-Vienna Declaration of March 2010. The Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC; formerly the Directorate-General for Education and Culture) is a Directorate-General of the European Commission. Iliana Naydenova Ivanova (; born 14 September 1975) is a Member of the European Court of Auditors since 2025. She previously served as European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth between 2023 and 2024. It consisted of one commissioner from each of the member states of the European Union – including Ursula von der Leyen, its President of the European Commission, president, who is from Germany. Tibor Navracsics (born 13 June 1966) is a Hungarian lawyer and politician, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade from June to September 2014. The Barroso Commission was the European Commission in office from 22 November 2004 until 31 October 2014. Dalia Grybauskaitė (; born 1 March 1956) is a Lithuanian politician who served as the eighth president of Lithuania from 2009 to 2019.
