EncroChat
EncroChat was a Europe-based communications network and service provider that offered modified smartphones allowing encrypted communication among subscribers. It was used primarily by organized crime members to plan criminal activities. Police infiltrated the network between at least March and June 2020 during a Europe-wide investigation. An unidentified source associated with EncroChat announced on the night of 12–13 June 2020 that the company would cease operations because of the police operation. The service had around 60,000 subscribers at the time of its closure. In the UK the National Crime Agency led an operation resulting in over 2,600 arrests and 1,384 criminal charges. Background EncroChat handsets emerged in 2016 as a replacement for a previously disabled end-to-end encrypted service. John Kinsella (criminal)
John Kinsella was an English criminal from Everton, Liverpool. He was shot dead in May 2018 by killers using encrypted EncroChat handsets to co-ordinate the murder. Early life He was an expert in judo and jujutsu, and was originally from Everton. He was a criminal associate of gangster Paul Massey and a pallbearer at his funeral. Criminal history In 1991, Kinsella was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court to nine years' imprisonment for attempted robbery and carrying a firearm with intent to commit an offence. In 2006, he was involved in a robbery in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and was put on trial for it in 2008. During the trial, the jury was read a letter from the father of Steven Gerrard saying that Kinsella had stopped his son from being threatened by a criminal, George Bromley Jnr, known as "The Psycho" in 2001. Mark Fellows (hitman)
Mark Fellows (nicknamed "The Iceman") (5 September 1980) is an English hitman convicted of the murders of John Kinsella and Paul Massey, rival enforcers to the Anti A Team criminal network. At the time of his conviction he was one of only 70 prisoners sentenced to a whole life term. Background Fellows lived in Warrington but was originally from Salford. Murders Paul Massey murder On 26 July 2015, Massey was shot dead outside his home on Manchester Road, Clifton, by a lone gunman. The killer was reported to have been wearing military style fatigues and carried a weapon "similar to a sub machine gun". Ennetcom
Ennetcom was a Netherlands based communications network and service provider. Company The company was based in the Netherlands as were most of its customers, but most of the company servers were based in Canada. Danny Manupassa, the company owner, was arrested in 2016 amid allegations that the phones were largely used by criminals. The company had about 19,000 users. The phones sold for €1,500 each and used company servers for traffic. The devices had been altered so they could not make calls or use the Internet normally. Canadian authorities seized the servers and passed messages to Dutch authorities. The latter had managed to decrypt 3.6 million messages by 2017, apparently because the key to the messages had been stored on the same servers the messages were on. These messages have led to arrests, including that of Naoufal Fassih. Fassih has been convicted of one charge of murder and one of attempted murder in relation to the murder of Ali Motamed.
