Emma (1972 TV Serial)
''Emma'' was a six-part TV serial adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel '' Emma'' by BBC Television that was broadcast in 1972. It was directed by John Glenister. This dramatisation brings to life the wit and humour of Jane Austen's novel ''Emma'', recreating the female character of whom she wrote, "no one but myself could like." Emma presides over the small provincial world of Highbury with enthusiasm, but she finds that it is all too easy to confuse good intentions with self-gratification. Often insensitive, well-meaning and incorrigible, having engineered the marriage of her governess, companion and friend Miss Taylor, she now turns her attention towards making a match for the local vicar Mr Elton and her new protégée Harriet Smith. ''Emma'' is a novel written by English author Jane Austen. It is set in the fictional country village of Highbury and the surrounding estates of Hartfield, Randalls, and Donwell Abbey, and involves the relationships among people from a small number of families. The novel was first published in December 1815, although the title page is dated 1816. As in her other novels, Austen explores the concerns and difficulties of genteel women living in Georgian era, Georgian–Regency era, Regency England. ''Emma'' is a comedy of manners. Before she began the novel, Austen wrote, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like." Raymond John Adamson (7 July 1920 – 25 March 2002) was a British actor often on television. Born in Beckenham, then in Kent, he made his TV debut in 1956, playing a constable in ''David Copperfield''. Hilda Lilian Fenemore (22 April 1914 – 13 April 2004) was an English actress with a prolific career in film and television from the 1940s to the 1990s. Amber Thomas (born November 17, 1993) is a Canadian swimmer. She lost her sight at ten years old due to a brain tumour and is classified in the S11 disability class.
