Embu Das Artes
Embu das Artes, previously and commonly known simply as Embu, is a Brazilian municipality in the State of São Paulo. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. The population is 276,535 (2020 est.) in an area of 70.40 km2. Its history brought it an unexpected specialization as a city for artists. This has paid tourism dividends to the city. History The history of Embu began in 1554, with the arrival of a group of Jesuits of the aldeamento or settlement of Bohi, later M'Boy, halfway between the sea and the São Paulo hinterlands. As the Jesuit missions in the interior of Brazil, the primary objective was to convert the native population to Roman Catholicism, in an attempt to use them as farm workers in the region. The municipalities of Brazil () are administrative divisions of the states of Brazil, Brazilian states. Brazil currently has 5,571 municipalities, which, given the 2019 population estimate of 210,147,125, makes an average municipality population of 37,728 inhabitants. The average state in Brazil has 214 municipalities. Roraima is the least subdivided state, with 15 municipalities, while Minas Gerais is the most, with 853. Northern states are divided into small numbers of large municipalities (e.g. Amazonas (Brazilian state), Amazonas is divided into only 62 municipalities), and therefore they cover large areas incorporating several separated towns or villages that do not necessarily conform to one single conurbation. Tadakiyo Sakai
Tadakiyo Sakai (5 January 1914, Nagasaki – 2 May 1981), also known as Sakai de Embu, was a Japanese-Brazilian sculptor. Biography From a young age, Sakai showed a liking towards painting, design, and sculpture. At 14 years old, he immigrated to Brazil, where he lived in the Pinheiros district of São Paulo, later settling in Embu das Artes. Recognized internationally as a sculptor in terracotta, he began his art career in 1951 under the guidance of Cássio M'Boy, Bruno Giorgi, and Victor Brecheret. He frequently collaborated with Afro-Brazilian artists such as Solano Trindade and incorporated Black designs and traditions into his works. Legacy The Memorial Sakai in the central area of Embu das Artes is a museum and school established to honour Sakai. The city also has the Tadakiyo Sakai State School, situated in the Vila Olinda neighborhood. Cotia
Cotia is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. The population is 274.413 (2022 est.) in an area of 323.99 km2. The city is at an elevation of 853 m. Cotia is linked with the Rodovia Raposo Tavares highway. The municipality is made up of the headquarters and the district of Caucaia do Alto, with its former districts of Jandira, Itapevi and Vargem Grande Paulista (originally called Raposo Tavares) having been split off to form new municipalities. History Cotia was founded in 1580, and was an active village during the "bandeiras" expeditions. In 1626, Raposo Tavares and his companions arrived in the city. Josef Mengele (; 16 March 19117 February 1979) was a Nazi German (SS) officer and physician during World War II at the Russian front and then at Auschwitz during the Holocaust, often dubbed the "Angel of Death" (). Raquel Trindade
Raquel Trindade de Souza, a Kambinda (10 August 1936, Recife – 15 April 2018, Embu das Artes) was a Brazilian artist, activist, choreographer, Carnaval bloc organizer, folklorist, plastic artist, and writer. She was the daughter of poet and folklorist Solano Trindade. Biography Trindade was the daughter of Solano Trindade and Maria Margarida Trindade, an occupational therapist. With her family, she moved to the city of Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Duque de Caxias in the 1940s. In the 1960s, she moved to Embu das Artes, where in 1975 she founded the Teatro Popular Solano Trindade (TPST). In Embu das Artes as well, she founded the Kambinda Maracatu Nação Carnaval group. As a painter, she had her first individual exhibition in 1966.
