Ely, Cambridgeshire
Ely ( ) is a cathedral city and civil parish in the East Cambridgeshire district, in Cambridgeshire, England, northeast of Cambridge, southeast of Peterborough and from London. At the 2021 United Kingdom census, 2021 census, the built-up area had a population of 19,200. The parish which includes the villages of Chettisham, Prickwillow, Queen Adelaide, Cambridgeshire, Queen Adelaide and Stuntney and the hamlet of Mile End had a population of 20,574 in 2021. Ely is built on a Kimmeridge Clay island which, at , is the highest land in the Fens. It was due to this topography that Ely was not waterlogged like the surrounding Fenland, and an island separated from the mainland. Ely Township is a civil township of Marquette County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,900 at the 2020 census. Communities * Clarksburg was settled in 1862 along the Escanaba River. The Michigan Iron Company had a blast furnace here. It was platted in 1881. The post office closed in 1894. * Greenwood is an unincorporated community on US 41/ M-28 approximately west of Ishpeming. Ely Hall is a two-story Richardsonian Romanesque classroom and laboratory building on the campus of Vassar College in the town of Poughkeepsie (town), New York, Poughkeepsie, New York, US. The structure houses Vassar's Department of Earth Science and Geography, the A. Scott Warthin Jr. Museum of Geology and Natural History, and the Aula, a spacious and frequently used gathering space. Originally known as the Alumnae Gymnasium, the building was erected as a response to the perception that Vassar's physical education program was falling behind those of other Seven Sisters (colleges), Seven Sisters colleges. Ely High School For Girls
Ely High School for Girls was a secondary school for girls which opened in 1905 at Bedford House, St.Mary's Street, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Bedford House was purchased for the school by the Isle of Ely County Council. History The school opened in May 1905 with thirty girl students under the supervision of the first Headmistress, Miss E.E.Fletcher. It was recognised formally as a public secondary school by the Board of Education in 1907. The school was based in Bedford House in St. Mary's Street in Ely. Bedford House had been the headquarters of the Bedford Level Corporation, the organisation that had managed the draining of the Fens. Ely Theological College was a college in Ely, Cambridgeshire, for training clergy in the Church of England. Ely College is a secondary academy school located in Ely, Cambridgeshire. History In 1957 Ely High School for Girls moved out of the centre of Ely to an extensive site on Downham Road. St Audrey's Infant School was built nearby on the site around the same time. In 1969 a donation from the Catherine Needham Foundation, a local charitable trust set up in memory of Lady Catherine Needham, enabled the establishment of the Needham's County Secondary School adjacent to the High School. It is from London Liverpool Street and is situated between and stations on the Fen line to King's Lynn.
