Elizabeth Capell, Countess Of Essex (born 1704)
Elizabeth Capell, Countess of Essex (1704 – 8 June 1784) was the second wife of William Capell, 3rd Earl of Essex, and the mother of William Anne Capell, 4th Earl of Essex. Lady Elizabeth was the daughter of Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke of Bedford. The earl, whose first wife Jane had died in 1724, married Elizabeth on 3 February 1726. They had two sons and two daughters. The only one to survive infancy was William Anne (1732-1799), who would become the 4th Earl. She died in June 1784, aged about eighty. William Capell, 3rd Earl of Essex (11 January 16978 January 1743) was an English courtier and diplomat. Early life He was the son of the 2nd Earl of Essex and Lady Mary Bentinck. His younger sister, Lady Mary Capel, married Alan Brodrick, 2nd Viscount Midleton. After his father's death, his mother remarried Rt. Hon. Sir Conyers Darcy (d. 1758), son of Hon. John Darcy. His paternal grandparents were Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex and Lady Elizabeth Percy (a daughter of Algernon Percy, 10th Earl of Northumberland). William Anne Holles Capell, 4th Earl of Essex (7 October 1732 – 4 March 1799), was a Kingdom of Great Britain, British landowner and peer, a member of the House of Lords. Early life Capell was born on 7 October 1732 in Turin. He was the son of William Capell, 3rd Earl of Essex (1696–1743), by his second marriage, to Elizabeth Capell, Countess of Essex (1704-1784), Lady Elizabeth Russell. Wriothesley Russell, 2nd Duke of Bedford KG (1 November 1680 – 26 May 1711) was an English nobleman and politician. He was the son of William Russell, Lord Russell, and his wife Lady Rachel Wriothesley. From 1683 until 1694, he was styled Lord Russell, and from 1695 until his accession in 1700, Marquess of Tavistock. Russell married the rich heiress Elizabeth Howland, daughter of John Howland of Streatham, on 23 May 1695. Shortly thereafter (13 June 1695), his grandfather, the Duke of Bedford, was created Baron Howland of Streatham to commemorate the marriage. Jane Capell, Countess of Essex (1694 – January 1724), previously Lady Jane Hyde, was a British court official, the first wife of William Capell, 3rd Earl of Essex. Andrea Soldi ( – ) was an Italian portraitist active in Britain. Life The only remaining source for this painter's early years is George Vertue, who in 1738 stated he was "about thirty-five or rather more", had been born in Florence and had come to England in about 1736 on the advice of British merchants belonging to the Levant Company, who had commissioned their portraits from him during his travels in the Middle East. From 1738 to 1744 he won much success in London's art market and among Italophile noblemen back from their Grand Tour, being preferred to both English portrait practice (fluctuating between Rococo and Godfrey Kneller, Kneller-like styles) and to other Italian portraitists in England at the time, such as the Cavaliere Rusca (worked in London 1738–39), and Andrea Casali (worked in London 1741–66).
