The term Elder, or its equivalent in another language, is used in several countries and organizations to indicate a position of authority. This usage is usually derived from the notion that the oldest members of any given group are the wisest, and are thus the Gerontocracy, most qualified to rule, provide counsel or serve the said group in some other capacity. In Christianity, an elder is a person who is valued for wisdom and holds a position of responsibility and authority in a Christian group. In some Christian traditions (e.g., Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism, Methodism) an ''elder'' is an ordained person who serves a local church or churches and who has been ordained to a ministry of word, sacrament and order, filling the preaching and pastoral offices. In other Christian traditions (e.g., Presbyterianism, Churches of Christ, Plymouth Brethren), an elder may be a lay person serving as an administrator in a local congregation, or be ordained and serving in preaching (teaching during church gatherings) or pastoral roles. There is a distinction between ordained elders and lay elders. A ''seniūnija'' (in English: eldership, elderate, ward, parish, or subdistrict) is the smallest Subdivisions of Lithuania, administrative division of Lithuania. An eldership may comprise a very small region consisting of few villages, one single town, or a part of a big city. Elderships vary in size and population depending on their location and nature. A few elderships make up a municipality. Šilainiai, Dainava (Kaunas), Dainava, Verkiai, Žirmūnai and Pašilaičiai are the most populous elderates, with population counts over , around twice the population of some entire municipalities. Elderships manage small-scale local matters, such as repairing pavements and dirt roads, and keep records on all families living in the eldership. ''Starostwo'' (literally " eldership") is an administrative unit established from the 14th century in the Polish Crown and later in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth until the partition of Poland in 1795. Starostwos were established in the crown lands (''królewszczyzna''). The term continues to be used in modern Poland. Starosta okruh () is an administrative unit in Ukraine, an optional subdivision of the hromadas. Description A starosta okruh is a political subdivision of a hromada whose purpose is to represent the local interests of a settlement or settlements within the hromada. Typically, they are formed on the territory of settlements which were formerly local governments in their own right, but which were merged in recent years to create the current amalgamated hromadas. As a rule, they can only be formed on settlements in a hromada which are outside the settlement that serves as the administrative center of the hromada. In Ukraine, a hromada () is the main type of municipality and the third level Administrative divisions of Ukraine, local self-government in Ukraine. The current hromadas were established by the Cabinet of ministers of Ukraine, Government of Ukraine on 12 June 2020. A municipality is designated ''urban hromada'' if its administration is located in a city; ''settlement hromada'' if it is located in a settlement (''selyshche''), and ''rural hromada'' if it is located in a village (Village#Ukraine, ''selo'') or a ''selyshche''. Hromadas are grouped to form Raions of Ukraine, raions (districts); groups of raions form Oblasts of Ukraine, oblasts (regions).
