Edward Clive, 2nd Earl Of Powis
Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis, KG (22 March 1785 – 17 January 1848), styled Viscount Clive between 1804 and 1839, was a British peer and Tory politician. He was the grandson of Clive of India. Early life Edward was born on 22 March 1785, the son of Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis, and his wife, the former Henrietta Herbert. He was one of four children. His younger brother, Robert Henry Clive, was a noted politician. His elder sister, Henrietta, was the wife of Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 5th Baronet. His younger sister, Charlotte, was the wife of Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, and she was famously the governess of the future Queen Victoria. Thomas Alcock (MP)
Thomas Alcock (19 August 1801 – 22 August 1866) was a British Member of Parliament for 24 years non-consecutively, a progressive Liberal on questions of expansion of the popular ballot he was also an established church benefactor. Alcock was born in Putney, son of Joseph Alcock of Roehampton then in the same parish. His father, a clerk at the Treasury, was a nephew of Sir Joseph Mawbey. Thomas siblings included Maria, who was married to the Reverend Brymer Belcher, and Letitia who married Charles Parke of Henbury, Dorset. Two brothers, Joseph and John predeceased him. He was schooled at Harrow and served briefly in the 1st Dragoon Guards and then in the 24th Dragoons on half-pay before retiring in 1832. Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland (20 April 178511 February 1847), styled Earl Percy until 1817, was a British aristocrat and Tory politician who served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland under the Duke of Wellington from 1829 to 1830. Background and education Northumberland was the son of Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland, and Frances Julia, daughter of Peter Burrell. Charlotte Florentia Percy, Duchess of Northumberland (''née'' Hon. Charlotte Florentia Clive; 12 September 1787 – 27 July 1866), was governess of the future Queen Victoria. Colonel Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 5th Baronet (25 October 1772 – 6 January 1840) was a Wales, Welsh landowner and Tory Party (UK), Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1794 to 1840. Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive, (29 September 1725 – 22 November 1774), also known as Clive of India, was the first British Governor of the Bengal Presidency. Clive has been widely credited for laying the foundation of the British East India Company (EIC) rule in Bengal. He began as a "writer" (the term used then in India for an office clerk) for the EIC in 1744, however after being caught up in military action during the fall of Madras, Clive joined the EIC's private army. Clive rapidly rose through the military ranks of the EIC and was eventually credited with establishing Company rule in Bengal by winning the Battle of Plassey in 1757. In return for supporting the Nawab Mir Jafar as ruler of Bengal, Clive was guaranteed a jagir of £90,000 () per year, which was the rent the EIC would otherwise pay to the Nawab for their tax-farming concession. Tory (British Political Party)
The Tories were a loosely organised political faction and later a political party, in the Parliaments of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. They first emerged during the 1679 Exclusion Crisis, when they opposed Whig efforts to exclude James, Duke of York from the succession on the grounds of his Catholicism. Despite their fervent opposition to state-sponsored Catholicism, Tories opposed his exclusion because of their belief that inheritance based on birth was the foundation of a stable society. After the succession of George I in 1714, the Tories had no part in government and ceased to exist as an organised political entity in the early 1760s (although the term continued to be used in subsequent years as a term of self-description by some political writers). Henrietta Antonia Clive, Countess of Powis (née Herbert; 3 September 1758 – 3 June 1830), was a British writer, mineral collector, and botanist. Her time in India, while her husband was Governor of Madras, was inspirational to her for all three of these pursuits. George Herbert (priest)
Hon. George Herbert (25 November 1825 – 15 March 1894) was an Anglican priest. A son of Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis, he was dean of Hereford. Early life Herbert was born on 25 November 1825. He was a younger son of Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis and Lady Lucy Graham (the daughter of James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose). He was educated at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, he was president of the University Pitt Club. Tragedy In 1848 George accidentally shot his father, Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis, while on a family shoot. The Earl died from his wounds 10 days later. This cruel turn of fate reputedly earned him the nickname "Bag-dad". Lieutenant-General Sir Percy Egerton Herbert (15 April 1822 – 7 October 1876) was a British Army officer and Conservative politician. Background and education Herbert was born at Powis Castle, near Welshpool, the second son of Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis, grandson of Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive. His mother was Edward's wife Lady Lucy Graham, third daughter of James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Military and political careers Herbert was made an ensign in the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Light Infantry in January 1840, serving with them in the war on the Xhosa (1851–53), the Orange River Boers expedition, and the battle of Berea. Education He was educated at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge, where he was president of the University Pitt Club, and he graduated as MA in 1840 and LLD in 1848.
