Education in Japan is managed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. Education is Compulsory education, compulsory at the Primary education, elementary and Middle school, lower secondary levels, for total of nine years. The contemporary Japanese education system is a product of historical reforms dating back to the Meiji era, Meiji period, which established modern educational institutions and systems.
