Edmonton Contemporary Artists' Society
Edmonton Contemporary Artists' Society (ECAS) is an international artists' exhibition collective founded in 1993, based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Background Since the 1920s, artists in English Canada had been heavily influenced by the landscape painting of the Group of Seven, the Canadian Group of Painters and the Eastern Group of Painters. Ted Godwin
Edward W. (Ted) Godwin, D.F.A. (August 13, 1933 – January 3, 2013) was the youngest member of the Regina Five, a group of five artists (Ken Lochhead, Art McKay, Ron Bloore and Douglas Morton) all based in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1961 when the group got its name from a show held by the National Gallery of Canada. Godwin is also known for his so-called Tartan paintings of the late 1960s and 1970s. Career Born in Calgary, Alberta, he attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Art from 1951 to 1955. He also attended several Emma Lake Artists' Workshops, including those led by Barnett Newman (1959), John Ferren (1960), Jules Olitski (1964), and Lawrence Alloway (1965). Robert Willms
Robert Byron Willms (born 1969) is a Canadian sculptor and teacher, best known for creating assembled, abstract steel sculptures. Biography Willms was born in Abbotsford, British Columbia in 1969 and resides in Edmonton, Alberta.He has lived in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Grande Prairie, and Kamloops, which he considers his hometown. Robert's father, John Willms, while working as a welder, encouraged his son to consider the ironworking trade, but Robert initially disliked the idea of such work. At eighteen years old, Willms was injured in a motorcycle accident, resulting in a below-knee amputation of one leg. Ever adaptable, Willms defied this disability as an avid snowboarder and cyclist. Willms' interest in making art began with pencil drawings, copying pictures of famous paintings out of art books, and lead to his earning Associate of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Graham Peacock
Graham Peacock (borh July 26, 1945 in London, United Kingdom) is an English-born abstract Canadian painter. He was a member of the art group founded by Dr. Kenworth Moffett (1934-2016) known as the New New Painters. Terry Fenton
Terry Fenton (born July 1, 1940) is a Canadian artist, author, critic, and curator known for his landscape paintings, his support of modernist art, and his writing on the work of artists such as Jack Bush, Anthony Caro, Peter Hide, Dorothy Knowles, Ken Macklin, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, and William Perehudoff. Fenton is the former director of the Edmonton Art Gallery (1972 - 1987), the A.C. Leighton Foundation, Calgary (1987 - 1993) and the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon (1993 - 1997). Anthony Caro
Sir Anthony Alfred Caro (8 March 192423 October 2013) was an English abstract art, abstract sculptor whose work is characterised by assemblages of metal using 'Found object, found' industrial objects. His style was of the modernist school, having worked with Henry Moore early in his career. He was lauded as the greatest British sculptor of his generation. When Caro was three, his father, a stockbroker, moved the family to a farm in Churt, Surrey. Walter Darby Bannard
Walter Darby Bannard (September 23, 1934 – October 2, 2016) was an American abstract painter and professor of art and art history at the University of Miami Early life and education Bannard was born in New Haven, Connecticut and attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where he graduated in 1952. He attended Princeton University, where he struck up a friendship and working relationship with Frank Stella, who was also interested in minimalist abstraction. Clement Greenberg () (January 16, 1909 – May 7, 1994), occasionally writing under the pseudonym K. Hardesh, was an American essayist known mainly as an art critic closely associated with American modern art of the mid-20th century and a formalist aesthetician.
