Earl Of Lindsay
Earl of Lindsay is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1633 for John Lindsay, 10th Lord Lindsay, who later inherited the ancient Earldom of Crawford. The two earldoms remained united until the death of the 22nd Earl of Crawford, also sixth Earl of Lindsay, in 1808. Then the earldom of Lindsay passed to David Lindsay, while the earldom of Crawford became dormant because no-one could prove a claim to the title until 1848. Both David, 7th Earl of Lindsay, and his successor Patrick, 8th Earl of Lindsay, died without sons, and the disputed claim over the earldom was resolved by the House of Lords in 1878 in favour of Sir John Trotter Bethune, 2nd Baronet. The subsidiary titles of the Earl are: Viscount of Garnock (created 1703), Lord Lindsay of The Byres (1445), Lord Parbroath (1633) and Lord Kilbirnie, Kingsburn and Drumry (1703), all in the Peerage of Scotland. In British heraldry, a coronet is a type of crown that is a mark of rank of non-reigning members of the royal family and peers. John Lindsay, 5th Lord Lindsay
John Lindsay, 5th Lord Lindsay of the Byres (died 1563) was a Scottish judge. John Lindsay was the son of John Lindsay of Pitcruvy, the Master of Lindsay, and grandson of Patrick Lindsay, 4th Lord Lindsay. He became Lord Lindsay of the Byres in 1526, and also assumed the disputed office of Sheriff of Fife. According to Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie he was compelled to give over some of his lands to the Earl of Angus, who was at that time very powerful because he had custody of the young James V of Scotland. He was made an Extraordinary Senator of the College of Justice on 27 June 1532. John, an Extraordinary Lord of Session in 1541, was present at the trials of Sir John Borthwick (for heresy) and James Hamilton of Finnart (for treason). Lieutenant-General John Lindsay, 20th Earl of Crawford (4 October 1702 – 25 December 1749) was a Scottish Peerage of Scotland, peer and the first colonel of the Black Watch on its formation in 1739. Biography Lindsay was the son of Lieutenant-General John Lindsay, 19th Earl of Crawford and Emilia Stuart and inherited his titles on the death of his father in 1714. He was educated at University of Glasgow and the Vaudeuil Military Academy, Paris. The Earl of Crawford was commissioned into the Scots Guards, 3rd Foot Guards in 1726, but later served in the Austrian and Russian armies. In the summer of 1739, during the Battle of Grocka (part of Siege of Belgrade (1739), Siege of Belgrade), he was badly wounded by a bullet to his thigh and was almost abandoned for dead on the battlefield. John Lindsay, 19th Earl of Crawford and 3rd Earl of Lindsay (died December 1713) was a Scottish peer and politician. Life He was born before 1672, the eldest son of William Lindsay, 18th Earl of Crawford, and succeeded to the earldoms in 1698 on the death of his father. His mother was Lady Mary Johnstone. On 6 March 1698, he succeeded to the title of 12th Lord Lindsay of Byres. He married Emilia Stuart daughter of James Stuart, Lord Doune, and Catherine Tollemache around 1700. Trained as a lawyer, in 1702 he rose to the position of Privy Counsellor for Scotland. He was Colonel of the "nd Troop of Horse in the Grenadier Guards from 1704 to 1714. Following the Treaty of Union in May 1707, he was elected as one of the first Scottish representative peers (to serve in the new United Kingdom), and served until September 1710.
