Division Of Riverina-Darling
The Division of Riverina-Darling was an Australian Electoral Division in the state of New South Wales. It was located in south-west rural New South Wales, and included the towns of Broken Hill, Griffith, Hay and Narrandera. The Division was created in 1984, largely replacing the abolished division of Riverina. Its name indicated its relationship with Riverina and the seat of Darling, abolished in 1969. Riverina-Darling had a notional Labor majority on its creation. However, it included most of the old Riverina, and was thus a natural choice for that seat's member, Noel Hicks of the National Party, to transfer for the 1984 election. Hicks overcame the Labor majority to win in 1984, and continued to fend off spirited challenges from Labor until it was abolished in 1993. The Riverina is an agricultural region of south-western New South Wales, Australia. The Riverina is distinguished from other Australian regions by the combination of flat plains, warm to hot climate and an ample supply of water for irrigation. Noel Hicks
Noel Jeffrey Hicks (born 4 November 1940) is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1980 to 1998, representing the New South Wales seats of Riverina and Riverina-Darling for the National Party. He also served as mayor of Broken Hill, New South Wales, in the 1970s. Early life Hicks was born in Adelaide on 4 November 1940. He was raised from the age of 15 by his uncle and aunt Dick and Edie Algate. He worked as a plumber and road design draftsman prior to entering politics. After moving to Broken Hill, New South Wales, he served on the Broken Hill City Council from 1971 to 1977, including two terms as mayor (1974–1975 and 1976–77). His term on the council concluded when he led his fellow councillors in a mass resignation over an industrial dispute between the Barrier Industrial Council and a council employee regarding the BIC's closed shop policy. The 1984 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 1 December 1984. All 148 seats in the House of Representatives (24 of them newly created) and 46 of 76 seats in the Senate (12 of them newly created) were up for election. The incumbent Labor Party led by Prime Minister Bob Hawke defeated the opposition Liberal–National coalition, led by Andrew Peacock.
