Desmognathus Imitator
The imitator salamander (''Desmognathus imitator'') is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the Appalachian Mountains in the southeastern United States. Description The imitator salamander is dark brown or blackish, sometimes with a pale intermittent stripe down its back and a pale line joining eye to jaw. It often has red or orange cheek patches and its hind legs are more stocky than its forelegs. Distribution and habitat The imitator salamander is found in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina at elevations more than above sea level. Its range extends from the Great Smoky Mountains in the north to the Plott Balsams and the Great Balsam Mountains in the south. Its habitat is the banks of streams, wet rocks, and the forest floor at higher altitudes. It shares its range with the Ocoee salamander (''Desmognathus ocoee'') but is usually found closer to water. Biology The imitator salamander is not toxic but is thought to be a ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Desmognathus Gvnigeusgwotli
The Cherokee black-bellied salamander or Smoky Mountains black-bellied salamander (''Desmognathus gvnigeusgwotli'') is a species of lungless salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the eastern United States, where it is only known from the southern Appalachian Mountains. It is known from extreme western North Carolina and southeastern Tennessee. It is restricted mostly to the Great Smoky Mountains, with isolated records also known from the Unicoi, Great Balsam, and Bald Mountains. This is the more common of the two species of "blackbelly salamander" known from Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This species and the other blackbelly salamander from the range (the Pisgah black-bellied salamander, ''D. mavrokoilus'') are the first new vertebrate taxa to be discovered in the park's all-taxa biodiversity inventory. Initially grouped with the blackbelly salamander (''D. quadramaculatus''), a 2022 study found significant genetic divergence within the species, but ... Desmognathus Fuscus
''Desmognathus fuscus'' is a species of amphibian in the family Plethodontidae (Plethodontidae, lungless salamanders). The species is commonly called the dusky salamander or northern dusky salamander to distinguish it from populations in the southern United States which form several distinct species, the southern dusky salamanders (''Desmognathus auriculatus, D. auriculatus, Desmognathus valentinei, D. valentinei''). The northern dusky salamander is the most widespread representative of its genus in Canada. It can be found in eastern North America from extreme eastern Canada in New Brunswick south to South Carolina. The size of the species' total population is unknown, but is assumed to easily exceed 100,000. The species' habitat differs somewhat geographically; dusky salamanders in the northern part of the range prefer rocky woodland streams, seepages, and springs, while those in the south favor floodplains, Swamp, sloughs, and muddy places along upland streams. They are most comm ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Desmognathus Folkertsi
The dwarf black-bellied salamander (''Desmognathus folkertsi'') is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the United States. Its natural habitats are temperate forests and rivers. The dwarf black-bellied salamander (''Desmognathus folkertsi'') was originally thought to be the blackbelly salamander (''Desmognathus quadramaculatus'') as they appear similar and are sympatric In biology, two closely related species or populations are considered sympatric when they exist in the same geographic area and thus frequently encounter each other. Desmognathus Conanti
The spotted dusky salamander (''Desmognathus conanti'') is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the United States. Taxonomy ''Desmognathus conanti'' was described in 1958 by Douglas A. Rossman, but was later reclassified as a subspecies of the northern dusky salamander (''D. fuscus''). However, numerous genetic and morphological studies since then have affirmed it as being a distinct species and it was elevated to full specific status in 1996. In addition, genetic studies indicate that ''D. conanti'' is paraphyletic with respect to the Santeetlah dusky salamander (''D. santeelah''), which lies nested within it; thus, ''D. conanti'' itself likely represents a species complex of multiple undescribed cryptic species. Range and Habitat ''Desmognathus conanti'' has a wide range in the southeastern and south-central United States, ranging from southern Illinois south to the panhandle of Florida, and west to Louisiana and southern Arkansas ...
