On 23 July 1983, English pop rock band Duran Duran staged an open air benefit concert at Villa Park, Birmingham, England in front of over 18,000 people who paid £8.50 a ticket to raise money for Mencap. It was one of only two concerts that summer by the band, the other being on 20 July before the Prince and Princess of Wales at London's Dominion Theatre. Birmingham was chosen as the venue, as it was where the band members' first met and formed the group. The concert and subsequent shows in the area have always been regarded as a "homecoming". This event was particularly special to Roger Taylor (Duran Duran drummer), Roger Taylor as he once had ambitions to be Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa's goalkeeper and was a regular spectator at the ground. Background The show started at 6 PM when the host, BBC Radio 1 presenter Peter Powell (DJ), Peter Powell, introduced the opening act "Prince Charles and the City Beat Band", which was followed by Robert Palmer who included the songs "Joh ...

WebCite
WebCite is an intermittently available archive site, originally designed to digitally preserve scientific and educationally important material on the web by taking snapshots of Internet contents as they existed at the time when a blogger or a scholar cited or quoted from it. The preservation service enabled verifiability of claims supported by the cited sources even when the original web pages are being revised, removed, or disappear for other reasons, an effect known as link rot. As of June 2023, the site no longer accepts new archive requests; old archive snapshots can still be viewed. The site is frequently offline with no explanation, and for lengthy periods of time. For example it was offline between October 29, 2021 and June 24, 2023 (1 year and 8 months) during which it reported "DB Connection failed". The site is owned and maintained by Gunther Eysenbach. Service features WebCite allowed for preservation of all types of web content, including HTML web pages, PDF f ...

Careless Memories
"Careless Memories" is the second single by the English new wave band Duran Duran, released on 20 April 1981. It reached no. 37 in the UK and no. 60 in Australia. Content "Careless Memories" has been described as "a classic hybrid of Euro-disco, new wave guitar pop and Bowie/Kraftwerk". Music journalist Annie Zaleski has noted its influence from punk rock as well as the motorik beats of Kraftwerk. Zaleski described it as a song that starts "with an insistent rhythmic oscillation that sounded like choppy helicopter blades" on which Duran Duran "piled on forceful sounds" featuring "Andy Taylor's slash-and-burn electric guitars, Nick Rhodes' atmospheric synths, quick and fiery bass from John Taylor and drums by Roger Taylor" and "a yearning, urgent vocal performance full of grit and desperation" by Simon Le Bon. While underperforming on the UK Singles chart upon its release, spending just four weeks on the chart with a peak position at number 37, the song quickly became a favo ...

My Own Way (song)
"My Own Way" is the fourth single by the English new wave band Duran Duran, originally released on 16 November 1981. The single was a follow up to the UK top 5 hit " Girls on Film", and was another hit, peaking at #14 on the UK Singles Chart and at #10 in Australia. Despite its success, the single has often been cited by the band as one of their least favourite and is rarely played live. The band subsequently re-recorded "My Own Way" for inclusion on their second album, '' Rio''. The newer album version dispenses with the "disco" feel of the single version in favour of a more electronic style. Background The single release of "My Own Way" has a fast tempo and "disco strings" arranged by Richard Myhill and Duran Duran. A slower version was later recorded for the '' Rio'' album, with slightly different lyrics. This version dispensed with the disco strings in favour of a new wave style with echoing synths and was later remixed by David Kershenbaum for the ''Carnival'' EP, ...

The song later appeared on the band's eponymous debut studio album ''Duran Duran'', released in June 1981. About the song "Planet Earth" begins with a mid-tempo synthesised sweep backed with sequenced electronic rhythm, but the real rhythm section of throbbing bass and crisp drums soon kick in. Muted guitar carries the up-and-down throbbing as the singer joins in. New Religion (Duran Duran Song)
''Rio'' is the second studio album by the English pop rock band Duran Duran, released on 10May 1982 through EMI. Produced by Colin Thurston, the band wrote and demoed most of the material before recording the album at AIR Studios in London from January to March 1982. The band utilised more experimentation compared to their debut album, from vibraphone and marimba to the sound of a cigarette being lit and cracking ice cubes. Andy Hamilton played a saxophone solo on the title track "Rio". A synth-pop, new wave and pop rock album with musical elements such as disco and funk, ''Rio'' is mostly composed of fast, upbeat numbers, with some slower synthesiser-based ballads. Lead vocalist Simon Le Bon's lyrics cover topics from chasing one's dreams to pursuing a love interest. Bassist John Taylor conceived the title, which the band felt represented the optimistic and exotic tone of the album. The cover artwork, painted by Patrick Nagel and designed by Malcolm Garrett to resemble 1950 ...
