The Down county football team represents Down GAA, the County board (Gaelic games), county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association, in the Gaelic games, Gaelic sport of Gaelic football, football. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football (; short name '')'', commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA, or football, is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or palming the ball into the other team's Goal (sport), goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Ulster
Ulster (; or ; or ''Ulster'') is one of the four traditional or historic provinces of Ireland, Irish provinces. Hill 16
Hill 16 – officially called Dineen Hill 16 and sometimes referred to as The Hill – is a terrace at the Railway End of Croke Park, the principal stadium and headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). James McCartan Jnr
James McCartan is an Irish Gaelic football manager and former player who played at senior level for the Down county team between 1990 and 2000. McCartan was part of the Down team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1991 and 1994. McCartan also won two Ulster Senior Football Championships with the county. At underage level McCartan won Ulster Minor and All-Ireland Minor Football Championship medals. He also won two All Star awards during his career. McCartan usually played as a corner forward. He was renowned for his speed, swerving runs at the defence and scoring ability. McCartan is regarded as one of the Down's best ever footballers. Mickey Linden
Michael Rory Linden is an Irish people, Irish Gaelic footballer who played for Down GAA, Down in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. He was part of the Down team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 1991, 1991 and All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 1994, 1994. Linden also won two Ulster Senior Football Championships and a National Football League (Ireland), National League title with Down. In 1994 he also won an GAA All Stars Awards, All Star award and was named Texaco Footballer of the Year. Linden usually played as a Gaelic football and Hurling positions, corner forward. Seán O'Neill
Seán O'Neill (born 1938, Newry) is an Irish retired Gaelic footballer. He played with his local club John Mitchel and was a member of the Down senior inter-county team from the 1950s until the 1960s. O'Neill is one of only four Down players to win three All-Ireland titles. Career O'Neill scored 85 goals and over 500 points for Down senior football team in his career, and was a key figure in the county’s All-Ireland victories of 1960, 1961 and 1968. O'Neill's credits include eight Ulster senior football medals and eight Railway Cup medals in 1960, 1963 to 1966, 1968, 1970 and 1971. Paddy Doherty (Gaelic Footballer)
Paddy Doherty (born 1934) is a former Irish people, Irish sportsperson. Born in Ballykinlar, County Down, he played Gaelic football with his local club Ballykinlar GAA, Ballykinlar and was a member of the Down GAA, Down senior inter-county team from the 1950s until the 1960s. Doherty captained Down to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, All-Ireland title in 1961. Sexual Assault Allegations and Trial of the Facts: On 10 May 2024 Doherty was found to have committed the act of sexual assault on 8 counts at Downpatrick Crown Court after a Trial of the Facts.
