Port Ellen () is a small town on the island of Islay, in Argyll, Scotland. The town is named after the wife of its founder, Walter Frederick Campbell. Caol Ila distillery (; , " Sound of Islay Distillery") is a Scotch whisky distillery near Port Askaig on the isle of Islay, Scotland, owned by Diageo. History Caol Ila is derived from Gaelic ''Caol Ìle'' for " Sound of Islay" (lit. "Islay Strait") in reference to the distillery's location overlooking the strait between Islay and Jura. It was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson. The distillery did not fare well, and changed hands in 1854 when Norman Buchanan, owner of the Isle of Jura Distillery, took over. Vatted Malt
A blended malt, formerly called a vatted malt, or pure malt, is a blend of different single malt whiskies from different distilleries. These terms are most commonly used in reference to Scotch whisky, or whisky in that style, such as Japanese whisky. Blended The legally anachronistic term ''vatted'' was used to describe the blending process but does not automatically equate to creation of a vatted malt. Jim Murray (born 13 November 1957) is an English writer, journalist and whisky critic. He gives observations on whisky and his annually updated book on the subject, ''Jim Murray's Whisky Bible''. Life Murray was born in Merstham, Surrey, UK. A keen journalist from a young age, he wrote for his local papers while still at school and presented his own television show in Northamptonshire, ''Murray on Monday'', at the age of sixteen.
