(''Thursday from Light'') is an opera by Karlheinz Stockhausen in a greeting, three acts, and a farewell, and was the first of seven to be composed for the opera cycle '' Licht: die sieben Tage der Woche'' (Light: The Seven Days of the Week). It was written between 1977 and 1980, with a libretto by the composer. Its second act, ''Michaels Reise um die Erde'' (''Michael's Journey Around the Earth''), has been performed and recorded individually. History was given its staged premiere on 15 March 1981 by the La Scala Opera in the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, but without the third act, which had to be omitted due to a strike by the opera chorus of La Scala. Karlheinz Stockhausen (; 22 August 1928 – 5 December 2007) was a German composer, widely acknowledged by critics as one of the most important but also controversial composers of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He is known for his groundbreaking work in electronic music, having been called the "father of electronic music", for introducing controlled chance ( aleatory techniques) into serial composition, and for musical spatialization. Lydia Steier
Lydia Steier (born 1978) is an American opera director who has made an international career based in Germany. She directed the Swiss premiere of Stockhausen's ''Donnerstag aus Licht'', chosen by critics as "Best Production of the Year" in 2016. In 2018, she became the first woman to stage Mozart's ''Die Zauberflöte'' at the Salzburg Festival, for the opening performance in 2018. Career Steier was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Her grandparents had left Vienna for the United States when the Nazis entered Vienna. She studied stage directing and voice at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. In 2002, she moved to Germany as a Fulbright student, and worked as an assistant at the Komische Oper Berlin. His recordings and performances have typically alternated between jazz and chamber or opera music, the latter often in collaboration with his father, composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Robert Gambill (born March 31, 1955, in Indianapolis) is an opera singer (Heldentenor). Biography Gambill studied mathematics at Purdue University (1973–1976) before becoming an exchange student at Hamburg University in Germany, where he added German studies to his curriculum.
