Domilise's Restaurant
Domilise's Po-Boy and Bar is an uptown New Orleans restaurant known for its po-boy sandwiches. The restaurant was founded in the 1930s by the Domilise family, who lived in the house above the single-room bar/dining area, and was run by Sam and Dorothy “Miss Dot” Domilise for over seventy-five years until her death in 2013. The restaurant was closed during 2005's Hurricane Katrina while the family evacuated to Alabama and to Franklin, Louisiana. The interior of the restaurant features photos of famous visitors, memorabilia, and has a bar in addition to the six tables. Po-boy
A po' boy (also po-boy, po boy derived from the non-rhotic southern accents often heard in the region, or poor boy) is a sandwich originally from Louisiana. It traditionally consists of a filling, which is usually roast beef, ham, or fried seafood such as shrimp, crawfish, fish, oysters, or crab on a New Orleans French bread roll cut lengthwise. This "po' boy bread," is known for its crisp crust and fluffy crumb. As the center of Hurricane Katrina passed southeast of New Orleans on August 29, 2005, winds downtown were in the Category 1 range with frequent intense gusts. The storm surge caused approximately 23 breaches in the drainage canal and navigational canal levees and flood walls. As mandated in the Flood Control Act of 1965, responsibility for the design and construction of the city’s levees belongs to the United States Army Corps of Engineers and responsibility for their maintenance belongs to the Orleans Levee District.
