Dieppe
Dieppe (; ; or Old Norse ) is a coastal commune in the Seine-Maritime department, Normandy, northern France. Dieppe is a seaport on the English Channel at the mouth of the river Arques. A regular ferry service runs to Newhaven in England. Famous for its scallops, Dieppe also has a popular pebbled beach, a 15th-century castle and the churches of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Remi. The mouth of the river Scie lies at Hautot-sur-Mer, directly to the west of Dieppe. The inhabitants of the town of Dieppe are called () and () in French. History First recorded as a small fishing settlement in 1030, Dieppe was an important prize fought over during the Hundred Years' War. Dieppe Maps
The Dieppe maps are a series of world maps and atlases produced in Dieppe, Seine-Maritime, Dieppe, France, in the 1540s, 1550s, and 1560s. They are large hand-produced works, commissioned for wealthy and royal patrons, including Kings Henry II of France and Henry VIII of England. The Dieppe school of cartography, cartographers included Pierre Desceliers, Jean Rotz, Guillaume Le Testu, Guillaume Brouscon and Nicolas Desliens. Jean Ribault
Jean Ribault (also spelled ''Ribaut'') (1520 – October 12, 1565) was a French naval officer, navigator, and a colonizer of what would become the southeastern United States. He was a major figure in the French attempts to colonize Florida. A Huguenot and officer under Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, Ribault led an expedition to the New World in 1562 that founded the outpost of Charlesfort on Parris Island in present-day South Carolina. Two years later, he took over command of the French colony of Fort Caroline in what is now Jacksonville, Florida. He and many of his followers died at the hands of Spanish soldiers during the Massacre at Matanzas Inlet, near St. Augustine. Hautot-sur-Mer (, literally ''Hautot on Sea'') is a Communes of France, commune in the Seine-Maritime Departments of France, department in the Normandy (administrative region), Normandy Regions of France, region in northern France. Geography A small town of farming and light industry situated in the Pays de Caux, immediately to the west of Dieppe, at the junction of the D 75, D 56 and Route nationale 25, D 925 roads. Newhaven, East Sussex
Newhaven is a port town in the Lewes (district), Lewes district of East Sussex, England, lying at the mouth of the River Ouse, Sussex, River Ouse. The town developed during the Middle Ages as the nearby port of Seaford, East Sussex, Seaford began drying up, forcing a new port to be established. The river Arques () is a watercourse located in the Seine-Maritime '' département'' of the Normandy region of north-western France. Only 6 kilometres in length, the river is formed by the confluence of three rivers at Arques-la-Bataille: the Eaulne, the Béthune and the Varenne which drain the pays de Caux and the pays de Bray.
