Dick's Picks Volume 5
''Dick's Picks Volume 5'' is the fifth live album in the ''Dick's Picks'' series of releases by the Grateful Dead. It was recorded on December 26, 1979, at the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland, California. It was released in May 1996. This concert was a benefit for the Seva Foundation, an organization started by Ram Dass and Wavy Gravy. Bob Weir still sits on the advisory board today. ''Volume 5'' was the first of the ''Dick's Picks'' to contain a complete concert. It was also the first release of a full concert to feature keyboardist Brent Mydland. Another Grateful Dead album that was recorded at the December 1979 run of concerts at the Oakland Auditorium is '' Road Trips Volume 3 Number 1''. Friend Of The Devil
"Friend of the Devil" is a song recorded by the Grateful Dead. The music was written by Jerry Garcia and John Dawson and the lyrics are by Robert Hunter. It is the second track of the Dead's 1970 album '' American Beauty''. Like most of ''American Beauty'', the song is largely acoustic and opens with Garcia playing a descending G major scale (G F# E D C B A G) in the bass register. The song was introduced in concert on March 20, 1970, at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. Following the group's October 1974–June 1976 touring hiatus, the song was performed in a significantly slower arrangement with extended guitar and keyboard solos. Released as a single by Sun Records in 1958, it went as high as #4 on the Billboard country music charts and stayed on the charts for 14 weeks. John Phillips (musician)
John Edmund Andrew Phillips (August 30, 1935 – March 18, 2001) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was the leader of the vocal group the Mamas & the Papas and remains frequently referred to as Papa John Phillips. In addition to writing the majority of the group's compositions, he also wrote " San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" in 1967 for former Journeymen bandmate Scott McKenzie, as well as the oft-covered " Me and My Uncle", which was a favorite in the repertoire of the Grateful Dead. Robert Hunter (lyricist)
Robert C. Christie Hunter (born Robert Burns; June 23, 1941 – September 23, 2019) was an American lyricist, singer-songwriter, translator and poet, best known for his work with the Grateful Dead. Born near San Luis Obispo, California, Hunter spent some time during his childhood in foster homes as a result of his father abandoning his family, and took refuge in reading and writing. He attended the University of Connecticut for a year before returning to Palo Alto, California, Palo Alto, where he became friends with musician Jerry Garcia. Hunter and Garcia began a collaboration that lasted through the remainder of Garcia's life. Garcia and others formed the Grateful Dead in 1965, and later began working with lyrics from Hunter, whom Garcia invited to join the band as a lyricist. Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician who was the lead guitarist and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s. "Dire Wolf" is a ballad by the Grateful Dead, released as the third track on their 1970 album '' Workingman's Dead''. Ma Rainey
Gertrude "Ma" Rainey ( Pridgett; April 26, 1886 – December 22, 1939) was an American blues singer and influential early-blues recording artist. Dubbed the " Mother of the Blues", she bridged earlier vaudeville and the authentic expression of southern blues, influencing a generation of blues singers.
