Desmond O'Halloran
Desmond O'Halloran (29 August 1940 – 28 September 2019) was an Irish singer and musician. Biography A native of Inishbofin, O'Halloran emigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1950s, where he enjoyed regular success as a singer at the All-Britain championships. Returning to Inishbofin in the mid-1980s, O'Halloran joined the island's céilí band, with whom many visiting musicians would sit in, as well as playing at sessions on the island. He gained chart success in 2001 with "Say You Love Me", which reached No. 4 on the Irish charts, and was later re-released as a remix. The song was taken from the Sharon Shannon album, ''The Diamond Mountain Sessions''. Inishbofin, County Galway
Inishbofin (derived from the Irish ''Inis Bó Finne'' meaning 'Island of the White Cow') is a small island off the coast of Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Inishbofin has around 180 inhabitants and is a tourist destination. Name The island's English name Inishbofin is derived from the Irish name ''Inis Bó Finne'' ('Island of the White Cow'). There are several legends concerning the origins of the island's name. According to one legend, the island was actually a floating place until some fishermen landed on it in a fog. By bringing fire onto the island, they dispelled the magic, fixing it in place. They then saw an old woman driving a white cow, which turned into a rock when the woman struck it with a stick. Mary Staunton is an Irish musician, concertina and accordion player. A native of County Mayo, Staunton released her first album, ''Bright Early Mornings'', in 1998. It was produced with support from Alec Finn of De Dannan, who also appears on the album. Staunton's second album, ''Circle of Friends'', was launched in July 2010. ''Circle of Friends'' was also produced by Alec Finn and launched at Connolly's pub, Kinvara, by actor Brendan Gleeson, whose fiddle playing features on the CD. Martin O'Halloran was a member of County Galway Land League, . Biography O'Halloran was Secretary of the Kiltullagh Branch of the Irish Land League. He was bound over to the police for having made a seditious speech at Craughwell in the course of which he threatened to disarm the police, called upon herds to leave their employment and claimed that landlords "were shaking like bulrushes in a bog." Imprisoned March 1881 under Forster's Coercion Act. The Loughrea area was then notorious for outrages and murder. A leading activist and campaigner, he reportedly held considerable influence in the area. He was active at the time of the murders of James Connors and Peter Dempsey, and other assaults in the area. Muintir Murchada was the name of an Irish territory which derived its name from the ruling dynasty, who were in turn a branch of the Uí Briúin. The name was derived from Murchadh mac Maenach, King of Uí Briúin Seóla, who died 891. Overview The ruling dynasty was first recorded as a lineage in 1061 and by 1238 the term denoted the territory. It came under the control of the Uí Briúin about the 11th century, its original rulers taking the surname Ó Flaithbheartaigh ( O'Flaherty). Rose Stone (born Rosemary Stewart, March 21, 1945) is an American singer and keyboardist. She is best known as one of the lead singers in Sly and the Family Stone, a popular psychedelic soul/funk band founded by her brothers, Sly Stone and Freddie Stone. Career 1960s-1980s Stone, along with brothers Sly and Freddie, formed Sly and the Family Stone in 1966. Frankie Gavin (Irish Fiddle Player)
Frankie Gavin is a fiddle player of traditional Irish music. Early years Frankie Gavin was born in 1956 in Corrandulla, County Galway, from a musical family; his parents and siblings being players of the fiddle and accordion. As a child he played the tin whistle from the age of four and, later, the flute. He received some formal training in music, but his musical ability on the fiddle is mainly self-taught. When 17 years old, he gained first place in both the All Ireland Under-18 Fiddle and Flute competitions. Music career In the early 1970s Gavin played musical sessions at Galway's Cellar Bar, with Alec Finn (bouzouki, guitar), Mickey Finn (fiddle), Charlie Piggott (banjo), and Johnnie (Ringo) McDonagh (bodhrán). Joseph Burke (11 April 1939 – 20 February 2021).His Parents were Michael Burke and Anne Keane. He was an Irish musician. He was noted for being a pre-eminent button accordion player, recording and performing traditional music for over half a century. Early life Burke was born in Kilnadeema, south of Loughrea in east County Galway, on 11 April 1939. He started playing traditional at age four, and bought his first accordion in the 1950's. He won the All-Ireland Senior Accordion Championship in Thurles in 1959 and again in Boyle the following year. She also plays the tin whistle and Diatonic button accordion, melodeon.
