The Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge (abbreviated POLIS) is the department at the University of Cambridge responsible for research and instruction in political science, international relations and public policy. It is part of the Faculty of Human, Social, and Political Science. History The inductive study of political science at Cambridge was pioneered in the 19th century by John Robert Seeley. In 1928, the Rockefeller Foundation endowed the university's first chair in political science, which was situated in the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge, Faculty of History and inaugurally held by Ernest Barker. David Runciman
David Walter Runciman, 4th Viscount Runciman of Doxford (born 1 March 1967), is an English academic and podcaster who until 2024 taught politics and history at the University of Cambridge, where he was Professor of Politics. From October 2014 to October 2018 he was also head of the Department of Politics and International Studies. In April 2024 he decided to resign his position at the university to focus on his podcast full-time. He was subsequently made Honorary Professor of Politics. Duncan Bell (historian)
Duncan Bell (born 31 December 1976) is Professor of Political Thought and International Relations at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge. Biography Bell's first degree was a BA in War Studies from King's College London (1995–1998). He was awarded an M.Phil. in International Relations (1999) and a PhD in History (2004) from the University of Cambridge, where he was a student at Jesus College. During the academic year 2000–2001 he was a Fulbright Scholar in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. After a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ's College, Cambridge (2004–2008), and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2008–2010), Bell was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS). The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is a research impact evaluation of British Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is the successor to the Research Assessment Exercise and it was first used in 2014 to assess the period 2008–2013. REF is undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies: Research England, the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Medr (preceded by Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW)), and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland (DfE).
