Denis Browne, 10th Marquess Of Sligo
Denis Edward Browne, 10th Marquess of Sligo (13 December 1908 – 11 September 1991), known as Denis Browne until 1952, was an Irish peer. Life Browne was the son of Captain Lord Alfred Eden Browne, the fifth son of Henry Browne, 5th Marquess of Sligo. His mother was Cicely Wormald, daughter of Edward Wormald. In 1952 he succeeded his uncle in the marquessate. Lord Sligo married Jose Gauche, daughter of William Gauche, in 1930. In 1982 his book ''Westport House and the Brownes'' was published. He died in September 1991, aged 82, and was succeeded by his son, Jeremy Browne, 11th Marquess of Sligo. Jeremy Browne, 11th Marquess Of Sligo
Jeremy Ulick Browne, 11th Marquess of Sligo (4 June 1939 – 13 July 2014), styled Earl of Altamont until 1991, was an Irish hereditary peer and businessman. On the death of his father, he was entitled to sit in the House of Lords by virtue of the subsidiary title Baron Mounteagle, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. However, he never took his seat and lost the right with the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999. Biography Altamont was the eldest son of Jose Gauche and Denis Browne, 10th Marquess of Sligo born in 1939. He was educated at Ludgrove School, St. Columba's College, Dublin, and briefly the Royal Agricultural College, which he left after only two terms. He returned to Ireland and help run the family estate, Westport House. During The Troubles, the estate was invaded by IRA supporters who waved black flags in support of the 1981 Irish hunger strike, a situation which Altamont was able to defuse. José Gauche became Jose Browne, 10th Marchioness of Sligo (1908–2004) was an Irish artist who was the 10th Marchioness of Sligo and the châtelain and the designer of the interiors of Westport House. Life Gauche's early life is not detailed. Her father, William, was a businessman and her ancestors included Huguenots. She was born in June 1908 and she was brought up in London. She comes to notice when she was an artist in London and she married on 12 January 1930. Their first home together was a Suffolk farm. In 1953 her father-in-law died and she became a Marchioness. Her husband had inherited a 800-acre farm, the huge Westport House and the title of Marquess of Sligo. This was not expected as his elder brother inherited the family fortune and he had four sons. However the four sons died and the Browne family's finances were substantially reduced because of death duties which were paid twice on the fortune. Publius Terentius Afer (; – ), better known in English as Terence (), was a playwright during the Roman Republic. He was the author of six comedies based on Greek originals by Menander or Apollodorus of Carystus. All six of Terence's plays survive complete and were originally produced between 166–160 BC. According to ancient authors, Terence was born in Carthage and was brought to Rome as a slave, where he gained an education and his freedom; around the age of 25, Terence is said to have made a voyage to the east in search of inspiration for his plays, where he died either of disease in Greece, or by shipwreck on the return voyage. Marquess of Sligo is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1800 for John Browne, 3rd Earl of Altamont. The Marquess holds the subsidiary titles of Baron Mount Eagle, of Westport in the County of Mayo (created 10 September 1760), Viscount Westport, of Westport in the County of Mayo (created 24 August 1768), Earl of Altamont, in the County of Mayo (created 4 December 1771), Earl of Clanricarde (created 1800) and Baron Monteagle, of Westport in the County of Mayo (created 20 February 1806). All these titles are in the Peerage of Ireland, except the Barony of Monteagle, which is in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
