David Sassoon (designer)
David Sassoon (5 October 1932 – 9 April 2025) was a British fashion designer and the owner of the Bellville Sassoon salon in Knightsbridge, London, founded by Belinda Bellville in 1953. Early life and education Born in Highbury, London on 5 October 1932 to Iraqi Jewish parents Gourgi and Victoria Sassoon, Sassoon grew up in North London and initially intended to become an actor but turned to fashion when his father disapproved. He attended Avigdor High School and Lauderdale Road Synagogue in West London. Career Sassoon was invited by Belinda Bellville to join her salon in 1958 and in 1970 it became the Bellville Sassoon. In 2023, it was announced that some of Sassoon's designs would be featured in an exhibition on the role of Jewish designers in London's fashion scene. David Sassoon (treasurer)
David Sassoon (October 1792 – 7 November 1864) was a Baghdadi Jewish merchant and philanthropist. David Sassoon served as the treasurer of Baghdad between 1817 and 1829. Fleeing persecution, Sassoon and his family emigrated to Bombay, British India. He became the leader of the Jewish community in Mumbai after the Baghdadi Jews emigrated to the city. Sassoon was the founder of the Sassoon family and the founder of David Sassoon and Sons, which later became David Sassoon & Co., a trading company owned by his family. Sassoon's success as a merchant made him known as the "Merchant Prince of Bombay". Sassoon also used his wealth for various philanthropic and architectural projects. David Solomon Sassoon (; 8 December 1880 – 10 August 1942) (also known as "David Suleiman Sassoon"), was a bibliophile and grandson of 19th century Baghdadi Jewish community leader David Sassoon. Family Sassoon was born in Bombay to Solomon and Flora Sassoon. He and his mother Flora moved to London in 1902, after Solomon's death in 1894. Manuscript collector Sassoon travelled extensively with the sole intent of collecting Hebrew books and manuscripts which he later catalogued in a two-volume book, entitled, ''Ohel David''. Background The ''Daredevils of Sassoun'' (also known as after its main hero ''David of Sassoun'') is an Armenian national epic poem recounting David's exploits. As an oral history, it dates from the 8th century. The epic was transmitted orally between generations around the geographical area surrounding Lake Van, particularly around Sassoun, a town that was 30 miles away from Lake Van.
