Operation Chastise, commonly known as the Dambusters Raid, was an attack on Nazi Germany, German dams carried out on the night of 16/17 May 1943 by No. 617 Squadron RAF, 617 Squadron RAF Bomber Command, later called the Dam Busters, using special bouncing bombs developed by Barnes Wallis. The Möhne Reservoir, Möhne and Edersee Dam, Edersee dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr (river), Ruhr valley and of villages in the Edertal, Eder valley; the Sorpe Dam sustained only minor damage. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed and several more damaged. Factories and mines were also damaged and destroyed. An estimated 1,600 civilians – about 600 Germans and 1,000 Forced labour under German rule during World War II, enslaved labourers, mainly Soviet – were killed by the flooding. Despite rapid repairs by the Germans, production did not return to normal until September. The RAF lost 56 aircrew, with 53 dead and three captured, amid losses of eight ...

They are a part of Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) and their tail code is ''NF''. Their radio callsign is "Chippy". Squadron insignia and nickname The squadron, originally known as the ''Tigers'', had its first insignia approved by Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) on 4 March 1944, consisting of a lion cub riding a torpedo. Bob Burns gave the squadron a lion cub. On the patch the cub is holding the musical "bazooka" that Burns used in his act, while riding a torpedo. The lion went to the Los Angeles Zoo. A new design replaced the cub with a tiger and parrot on the torpedo, and was approved on 18 April 1949. Sometime in the 1950s, the squadron adopted a shield insignia that featured an eagle's head and a torpedo. On 1 May 1951, squadron aircraft disabled the heavily defended Hwacheon Dam held by Nor ...

The Dam Busters (book)
''The Dam Busters'' is a 1951 non-fiction book by Paul Brickhill about Royal Air Force 617 Squadron originally commanded by Wing Commander Guy Gibson V.C. during World War II. The squadron became known as the "Dam Busters" because of Operation Chastise, a mission using highly specialised bombs to destroy Ruhr dams in Germany. The book also covers the subsequent history of 617 Squadron, as an elite squadron specialising in attacking difficult targets with outsize weapons and precision techniques. Among Gibson's successors as commander was Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC, and the book describes Cheshire's unorthodox leadership style and innovative target-marking techniques. Development After the end of World War II John Nerney, head of the Air Historical Branch of the British Air Ministry identified the need for a history of 617 Squadron. He initially approached its former commanding officer Leonard Cheshire, who declined citing health issues and his work commitments running a ...

Sherriff from the books '' The Dam Busters'' (1951) by Paul Brickhill and '' Enemy Coast Ahead'' (1946) by Guy Gibson, the film depicts the true story of Operation Chastise in which the RAF's 617 Squadron attacked the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams in Nazi Germany with Barnes Wallis's ''bouncing bomb''. ''The Dam Busters'' was acclaimed by critics, who widely praised its acting (especially Todd's and Redgrave's), Anderson's direction, its superlative special effects photography by Gilbert Taylor and soundtrack score by Eric Coates (especially the stirring '' The Dam Busters March'' theme tune). The film was Britain's biggest box-office success of 1955. A much-loved British classic, ''The Dam Busters'' has since been cited as one of the best British war films and one of the greatest films of the 20th century. In ...

The Dam Busters March
''The Dam Busters'' is the theme for the 1955 British war film '' The Dam Busters''. The musical composition, by Eric Coates, has become synonymous with both the film and the real Operation Chastise. ''The Dam Busters March'' remains a very popular accompaniment to flypasts in the UK. Origins Coates's son, Austin Coates, recounted in a BBC radio interview that the march was not written for ''The Dam Busters''. His father had been carrying out an exercise in composing a march that emulated the musical forms of Edward Elgar, such as in the '' Pomp and Circumstance Marches''. A few days after completing the composition Coates was contacted by the film's producers. Coates had a profound dislike of writing film music and turned down the producers' numerous requests. Not until they told him that this was "a film of national importance" did he agree. On hearing more about the film, he came to the conclusion that the piece he had just finished would be a perfect overture. The march was ...
