Cornelis De Bie (1621–1664)
Cornelis de Bie (c. 1621 – 1664), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Biography His birth date and place are not known but his father was reported in Amsterdam. He should not be confused with the 17th century Flemish author Cornelis de Bie whose chief work is the volume of artist biographies entitled Het Gulden Cabinet. It is not clear who his teacher was. Frans Hals has been mentioned as a possibility but this is not generally accepted and he may have trained in Amsterdam. He referred to himself a painter as early as 1642 and married in 1649. Theodor Roos
Theodor Roos (1638–1698) was a German Baroque painter of historical scenes. Biography He was born in Wesel. His family left their home in the Palatinate c. 1637, fleeing the Thirty Years War, and moved to Amsterdam around 1640. There, from 1647 to 1651, Roos trained alongside his brother Johann Heinrich Roos in history painting with Guilliam Dujardin (1597–after 1647), in landscape with Cornelis de Bie and in portraiture with Barent Graat. The brothers returned with the rest of the family to Germany in 1653, where they worked for a monastery in Mainz. When Johann left, Theodor Roos won a commission to paint the civic guard in Mannheim. The painting was displayed in the city hall, and won him the favor of Charles I Louis, Elector Palatine, whose wedding portraits he painted in return for a golden necklace with a commemorative coin. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. Arnold Houbraken
Arnold Houbraken (28 March 1660 – 14 October 1719) was a Dutch painter and writer from Dordrecht, now remembered mainly as a biographer of Dutch Golden Age painters. Life Houbraken was sent first to learn ''threadtwisting'' (Twyndraat) from Johannes de Haan, who introduced him to engraving. After two years he then studied art with Willem van Drielenburch, who he was with during the rampjaar, the year 1672. He then studied 9 months with Jacobus Leveck and finally, four years with Samuel van Hoogstraten. In 1685 he married Sara Sasbout, and around 1709 he moved from Dordrecht to Amsterdam. Arnold Houbraken painted mythological and religious paintings, portraits and landscapes. He is best known for the art historical work ''The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters'' (1718–1721). When he died his son Jacob assisted his mother with the last proofs of the manuscript before publishing. The Netherlands Institute for Art History or RKD (Dutch: RKD-Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis), previously Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), is located in The Hague and is home to the largest art history center in the world. The center specializes in documentation, archives, and books on Western art from the late Middle Ages until modern times.
