The State Comptroller of Israel ( he, מבקר המדינה ''Mevaker HaMedina'', ar, مراقب الدولة, literally: ''Critic of State'') inspects, reviews, and audits the policies and operations of the government of the State of Israel. The State Comptroller’s Office is also the government’s office for public complaints. It serves under the aegis of the Knesset and has authority to examine all agencies of government. History In 1965 the Comptroller's Office hosted V INCOSAI, the fifth triennial convention of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions. Matanyahu Englman
Matanyahu Englman ( he, מתניהו אנגלמן; b. June 8, 1966) is the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of the State of Israel.He is also the first Vice-President of EUROSAI, the European Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions. He is slated to become president of the organization in 2024. Biography Matanyahu Englman was born in Jerusalem to Binyamin (Robert) and Chasia Englman, and grew up in Rehovot. His father was a physicist at the Soreq Institute. His maternal grandfather was Yehuda Kiel, who was awarded the Israel Prize in Jewish Studies in 1992 for his commentary on the Bible. Englman earned a BA in economics and accounting and an MA in business administration from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Micha Lindenstrauss ( he, מיכה לינדנשטראוס) (28 June 1937 – 2 May 2019) was an Israeli judge and the State Comptroller between 2005 and 2012. Biography Micha Lindenstrauss was born in Berlin, Germany. His family immigrated to Mandatory Palestine when he was two years old, on the eve of World War II. He studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was married and a father to three daughters, one of whom is a judge. Eliezer Goldberg ( he, אליעזר גולדברג; 24 May 1931 – 12 March 2022) was an Israeli judge and civil servant who served on the Supreme Court of Israel, and as the State Comptroller of Israel. Miriam Ben-Porat ( he, מרים בן פורת, née Shinezon, 26 April 1918 – 26 July 2012) was an Israeli jurist. She was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Israel and the State Comptroller of Israel from 1988–1998. Biography Miriam Shinezon (Ben-Porat) was born in 1918 in Vitebsk, Belarus (then Russia), the youngest of three sisters and four brothers. She grew up in Lithuania, where her parents owned a textile factory. After finishing high school in 1936, she immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine by herself. Most of her family was murdered in the Holocaust. In the Yishuv, she changed her name to Ben-Porat. Yitzhak Ernst Nebenzahl ( he, יצחק ארנסט נֶבֶּנְצָל; 1907–1992) was appointed State Comptroller of the State of Israel after the establishment of the state in 1948. Yosef Haim Shapira ( he, יוסף חיים שפירא; born 5 July 1945) is an Israeli attorney and judge who served as the seventh State Comptroller of Israel from July 2012 to July 2019. Biography Shapira was born in Jerusalem. He earned a law degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1971 and in 1972 was certified as a lawyer.
