Composers Association Of New Zealand
The Composers Association of New Zealand (CANZ), established in 1974, after an initial meeting of composers was organised by David Farquhar. Farquhar was the association's first president. It is a body that lobbies for the interests of New Zealand composers. Through its affiliations with the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) and thAsian Composers League CANZ provides its members with opportunities to participate in international music festivals as well as other opportunities. The organisation's flagship event is the annuaCANZ Nelson Composers Workshop a four-day gathering of New Zealand's emerging composers. CANZ members receive the yearbook, Canzona, and the bi-monthly newsletter, Canzonetta. The association presents two prizes annually: the KBB Citation for Services to New Zealand Music and the CANZ Trust Fund Award which recognises current compositional achievement. David Farquhar
David Andross Farquhar (5 April 1928 – 8 May 2007) was a New Zealand composer and professor of music at Victoria University of Wellington. Biography Farquhar was born in Cambridge, New Zealand, in 1928 but spent most of his early years in Fiji. He was educated in New Zealand, and was a pupil at St Peter's School in Cambridge and Wanganui Collegiate School. He was an accomplished sportsman and academic at both schools, captaining the cricket team in summer and hockey team in winter. He also broke many of their short- and middle-distance running records. He began his university studies in Christchurch before completing his degree at Victoria University College where he studied with Jenny McLeod and Douglas Lilburn. He went to the United Kingdom where he completed a Master of Arts at the University of Cambridge, and also studied composition with Benjamin Frankel at the Guildhall School of Music in London. Philip Dadson
Philip Dadson (born 1946 in Napier, New Zealand) is a New Zealand musician and artist, who was in the foundation group for the Scratch Orchestra and founder of From Scratch. He lectured at the Elam School of Fine Arts, part of the University of Auckland from 1977, leaving in 2001 to take up full-time art practice. He co-authored the 2007 book ''Slap Tubes and other Plosive Aerophones'' with fellow instrument inventor Bart Hopkin, whose 1998 CD/book ''Gravikords, Whirlies & Pyrophones'' had also featured Dadson's group From Scratch. In 2010 the Wellington Sculpture Trust commissioned ''Akau Tangi'', a wind powered sculpture installed on Cobham Drive, Wellington. The eight poles, some partly submerged in the sea, are each topped with a rotating cone that produce a low level musical note. Gao Ping
Gao Ping (; born Chengdu, 1970) is a Chinese composer and professor of composition at the Conservatory of Music at Capital Normal University in Beijing. He has also taught composition at the University of Canterbury and University of Waikato in New Zealand. Gao gained his D.Mus in composition from the University of Cincinnati University. He is professor in composition at the Conservatory of Music at Capital Normal University in Beijing. He also holds a guest professorship at the China Conservatory. Gareth Farr
Gareth Vincent Farr (born 29 February 1968) is a New Zealand composer and percussionist. He has released a number of classical CDs and composed a number of works performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and Royal New Zealand Ballet. He has also performed in drag under the name Lilith LaCroix in a show called ''Drumdrag'' and has also released a CD under that name. Early life and education Farr was born in Wellington in 1968. He began his studies at the University of Auckland in composition, orchestration and electronic music. Dylan Lardelli
Dylan Lardelli (born 1979) is a New Zealand composer and guitarist. He is of Māori Ngāti Porou and Ngāi Tūhoe descent. Early life Lardelli was born in Wellington in 1979 of Ngāti Porou and Ngāi Tūhoe descent. He attended school in Hawkes Bay, starting to learn the guitar in the 5th form (Year 11 in the New Zealand school system). He enrolled at Victoria University of Wellington to study guitar and composition, where his lecturers were John Psathas, Ross Harris and Jack Body. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in guitar and, in 2003, a Masters in composition. Eve De Castro-Robinson
Eve de Castro-Robinson (born 9 November 1956 in London, England) is a New Zealand composer, professor and graphic designer. Her compositions include orchestral, vocal, chamber and electroacoustic works. She studied at the University of Auckland, where in 1991 she became the first person to receive a DMus from the University. She is Associate Professor of Composition at the University of Auckland. A "de Castro-Robinson Portrait" concert was held at the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts in Wellington in 2004 and a 50th birthday concert was held at the University of Auckland in 2006. Anthony Ritchie
Anthony Damian Ritchie (born 18 September 1960) is a New Zealand composer and academic. He has been a freelance composer accepting commissions for works and in 2018 he became professor of composition at The University of Otago after 18 years of teaching composition. Since 2020 he has been head of Otago's School of Performing Arts, a three-year position. His works number over two hundred, and include symphonies, operas, concertos, choral works, chamber music and solo works. Early life Ritchie was born in Christchurch in 1960. He is the son of John Ritchie, who was a professor teaching composition and orchestration at the University of Canterbury. His mother was a soprano soloist and he began learning the piano at the age of nine, showing early aptitude for improvisation. Helen Bowater
Helen Bowater (b. 16 Nov 1952) is a New Zealand composer. She was born in Wellington into a musical family, and studied piano and violin with Gwyneth Brown. In 1982 she graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in music history and ethnomusicology from Victoria University of Wellington. She continued her studies in electroacoustic music with Ross Harris and in composition with Jack Body. Bowater played in the Gamelan Padhang Moncar at Victoria University and her composition ''Tembang Matjapat'' (1999) is scored for gamelan and western strings and percussion instruments. After completing her studies, Bowater worked as a singer, pianist and violinist with ensembles and choirs, and also worked in rock bands Extra Virgin Orchestra and pHonk and with the Victoria University Gamelan Padhang Moncar. John Psathas
John Psathas, (born Ioannis Psathas, el, Ιωάννης Ψάθας; 1966) is a New Zealand composer. He has works in the repertoire of such high-profile musicians as Evelyn Glennie, Michael Houstoun, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman and the New Juilliard Ensemble, and is one of New Zealand's most frequently performed composers. He has established an international profile and receives regular commissions from organisations in New Zealand and overseas. Maria Grenfell
Maria Grenfell (born 1969) is an Australian music teacher and composer of New Zealand origin. Early life and education Maria Grenfell was born in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia in 1969. She grew up and was educated in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Master of Music degree. She subsequently went to the US, where she completed a Master of Arts at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and a doctorate from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, while also lecturing in music there. John Young (composer)
John Young is an electroacoustic music composer born March 4, 1962, in Christchurch, New Zealand, and currently living in Leicester, UK. He studied at the University of Canterbury, completing a doctorate on the manipulation of environmental sound sources in electroacoustic music. In 1989, with the assistance of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand (now the Creative New Zealand), he travelled to the UK to further his studies of electroacoustic music composition working privately in the studios of the University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK) with Denis Smalley. Leonie Holmes
Leonie Joyce Holmes (born 1962) is a New Zealand composer and lecturer at the University of Auckland with an interest in music education. Early life and education Holmes was born in Auckland in 1962. She began learning piano at age six and attended Pakuranga College. She studied at the University of Auckland from 1981–1985, graduating with MMus in composition. Her teachers were Douglas Mews, John Rimmer (composer), John Rimmer and John Elmsly. She played the violin in the Auckland Youth Orchestra.
