''Carbide and Sorrel'' () is a 1963 East Germany, East German comedy film directed by Frank Beyer and starring Erwin Geschonneck. Plot In 1945, after the end of World War II in Europe, Karl 'Kalle' Blücher examines the ruins of the cigarette factory where he worked in the city of Dresden. The other workers tell him they need Calcium carbide, carbide to replace the destroyed roof. They assign him the job of getting it, as he has a brother-in-law in Wittenberge who works at a carbide company. Also, they are all married and have to look after their families, while he is single and a vegetarian, so he should be better able to feed himself along the way. Karl walks to Wittenberge. His brother-in-law gives him seven barrels, but cannot help him with their transportation. His return to Dresden turns into a long chain of comical incidents. Frank Beyer
Frank Paul Beyer (; 26 May 1932 – 1 October 2006) was a German film director. In East Germany he was one of the most important film directors, working for the state film monopoly DEFA and directed films that dealt mostly with the Nazi era and contemporary East Germany. His film ''Trace of Stones'' was banned for 20 years in 1966 by the ruling SED. His 1975 film '' Jacob the Liar'' was the only East German film ever nominated for an Academy Award. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 until his death he mostly directed television films. Fred Delmare
Werner Vorndran (24 April 1922 – 1 May 2009), known professionally as Fred Delmare, was a German actor. Life and work Werner Vorndran was the son of a carpenter and a seamstress and grew up in Hüttensteinach at Sonneberg in Thuringia, where as an adolescent he appeared on a peasant stage. After his time in the Volksschule he learned the trade of a tool and die maker. As military volunteer he went to the marine in Bremerhaven. At the local municipal theatre he took his first drama lessons with the theatre manager Karl Georg Saebisch 1940 and 1941 and worked as background actor in an operette production. East German Films
This is a list, in year order, of the most notable films produced in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) from 1945 until German Reunification in October 1990. The state owned East German film company DEFA produced about 800 feature films between 1946 and 1992. Besides DEFA, the state broadcaster DFF and the Deutsche Hochschule für Filmkunst (now the Filmuniversität Babelsberg) were the only other organizations in the GDR that produced feature films for cinematic release, although far fewer than DEFA. DEFA also produced about 750 animated movies and more than 2500 documentaries and short films. Horst Fritz Otto Giese (31 January 1926 – 29 December 2008) was an East German actor. Biography In 1945, Giese made his debut on stage at his native Neuruppin, then in the Soviet occupation zone. Later he appeared on television. His first role in a movie was at the 1954 ''Alarm in the Circus'' (''Alarm in Zirkus''). He performed in some 50 films and television productions, and is known for his portrayals of Joseph Goebbels in several films, including in the five-part series ''Liberation'', film ''Soldiers of Freedom'', the two-part Bulgarian production ''Anvil or Hammer'' and in the Czechoslovak comedy ''Tomorrow I'll Wake Up and Scald Myself with Tea''.
