Caballo, New Mexico
Caballo is a census-designated place in Sierra County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 112 as of the 2010 census. Caballo has a post office with ZIP code 87931. The community is located along New Mexico State Road 187, north and south of Exit 63 on Interstate 25. Caballo was founded in 1908, when John Gordon and his extended family homesteaded here. It was named after the mountains to the east. A post office was established in 1916. In 1938, the Caballo Dam was constructed, creating a lake which forced residents to re-establish the community to the west. The lake is host to Caballo Lake State Park. Caballo Island (which means "Horse Island" in Spanish) is a bluff, rocky island located at the entrance to Manila Bay in the Philippines. It is about long with the highest elevation at 381 feet high. Caballo Lake
Caballo Lake is a reservoir on the Rio Grande created by the Caballo Dam in southern New Mexico, United States. It is the fourth largest reservoir in New Mexico in terms of surface area and the fifth largest body of water in New Mexico in terms of volume. The lake is in Caballo Lake State Park, which is approximately south of Truth or Consequences. The lake is used for recreational activities, such as boating, swimming, waterskiing, and fishing. Fish in the lake include walleye, bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. Caballo Lake is also a birdwatching site. Many migratory birds use the lake as a rest stop during their travels, and eagles are often seen in the area. Caballo Lake is named for the Caballo Mountains that border the lake to the northeast, east, and southeast, in which wild horses roamed; Caballo means "horse" in Spanish. Caballo Mountain
Pico del Caballo, Cerro del Caballo or simply Caballo ("horse") is a high mountain in the Sierra Nevada, Spain. It is the westernmost three-thousander of the range. Climbing Pico del Caballo can be reached from the towns of Lanjarón and Durcal and also from the Sierra Nevada Ski Station. This ski resort is located at Pradollano, on the northwest flank of Pico de Veleta. There is a hut on the east side of Pico del Caballo at an altitude of 2800 meters. The hut can accommodate eight people and can be used year round. It is categorized as a bivouac, which means that it is intended to give protection only. Other huts, such as the Poqueira hut, are guarded and usually provide meals and heating. Another nearby hut is the Elorrieta hut, at the summit of Tajos de la Virgen mountain. Caballo Mountains
The Caballo Mountains, (Spanish: "horse") are a mountain range located in Sierra and Doña Ana Counties, New Mexico, United States. The range is located east of the Rio Grande and Caballo Lake, and west of the Jornada del Muerto; the south of the range extends into northwest Doña Ana County. The nearest towns are Truth or Consequences and Hatch. Most of the Caballo Mountains are located on land owned by the Bureau of Land Management. The mountains are unusual, and perhaps unique in New Mexico, for the relatively complete geologic history revealed by their rocks. Vehicular access to the range is by Interstate 25 from the west, by New Mexico State Road 51 from the north, and by several dirt roads from the east.
