Yonsei (Japanese Diaspora)
is a Japanese diasporic term used in countries, particularly in North America and in Latin America, to specify the great-grandchildren of Japanese immigrants (Issei). The children of Issei are Nisei (the second generation). Sansei are the third generation, and their offspring are Yonsei. For the majority of Yonsei in the Western hemisphere, their Issei ancestors emigrated from Japan between the 1880s and 1924. The character and uniqueness of the ''Yonsei'' is recognized in its social history. The ''Yonsei'' are the subject of ongoing academic research in the United States and Japan. Yonsei University
Yonsei University () is a Private university, private Christian university, Christian research university located in Seoul, South Korea. Yonsei is one of the three most prestigious universities in the country, part of a group referred to as SKY (universities), SKY universities. The university traces its roots to the first modern medical center in Korea, ''Gwanghyewon'' (광혜원 廣惠院, House of Extended Grace) founded in April 1885, now Severance Hospital, Severance Union Medical College (세브란스 의과대학; 세브란스 醫科大學). The institution in its current university form was established in January 1957 through the union of Yonhi College () and Severance. As a tribute, the name "Yonsei" was derived from the first syllables of the names of its two parent institutions, "Yon; 연; 延" from Yonhi College and "Sei; 세; 世" from Severance Union Medical College. Severance Hospital
Severance Hospital is a teaching hospital located in Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun District, South Korea. It is one of the oldest and biggest university hospitals in South Korea. It has 2,437 beds and treats approximately 2,500,000 outpatients and 840,000 inpatients annually. The hospital was founded as a royal hospital in 1885 by Horace N. Allen which was then restructured as Severance Hospital by Oliver R. Avison, a Canadian medical missionary with the advisory of Underwood, his role model and financial assistance from Louis H. Severance. On September 23, 1904, Avison's hospital, Severance Hospital and College, first opened its doors. Since 1957 it has been affiliated with Yonsei University College of Medicine, and is part of the Yonsei University Health System.
