Würzburg (district)
Würzburg is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the northwestern part of Bavaria, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from the north, clockwise) Main-Spessart, Schweinfurt, Kitzingen, Neustadt (Aisch)-Bad Windsheim, and the district Main-Tauber in Baden-Württemberg. The city Würzburg is not part of the district, although it is completely enclosed by it. History In 1852, districts were created in the region, including the two precursor districts of Würzburg and Ochsenfurt. In 1972 the previous district Würzburg was merged with the former district Ochsenfurt, and several municipalities from the districts Marktheidenfeld, Karlstadt, Kitzingen and Gerolzhofen were added to form the district with today's borders. Economy In 2017 (latest data available) the GDP per inhabitant was €28,681. This places the district 86th out of 96 districts (rural and urban) in Bavaria (overall average: €46,698). Würzburg (; Main-Franconian: ) is, after Nuremberg and Fürth, the Franconia#Towns and cities, third-largest city in Franconia located in the north of Bavaria. Höchberg
Höchberg is a municipality in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany. Höchberg borders, in the east, directly on the city of Würzburg. Höchberg consists of two main urban areas: Altort and Hexenbruch. Residential construction areas have been added in recent years, for example "Mehle" and " Mehle II". History The earliest recorded official reference to Höchberg dates from 748. Jewish families resided in Höchberg at least since the late 1600s. Giebelstadt
Giebelstadt () is a municipality in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria in Germany. History The town is the birthplace of Florian Geyer (1490–1525), also known as "Florian Geier from Giebelstadt", a Franconian nobleman who led the Black Company during the German Peasants' War resulting from the Protestant Reformation in Germany in the 16th century. Florian led the revolt to the Bishop's Residence in Würzburg where the revolt was repressed. In 1935, the construction of the Giebelstadt airfield was authorized. It was first operated by the German Luftwaffe in World War II. During this time, Adolf Hitler built an escape railroad track that led to the airfield, which was discovered by the U.S. Army in 1945. Giebelstadt supported 5,786 soldiers and their families during the U.S. Army's 62-year history until its closure along with the U.S. Forces draw down of Würzburg area in 2006.
