Whitmer Peninsula
The Whitmer Peninsula () is a broad ice-capped peninsula, about long and wide, between Cheetham Ice Tongue and Harbord Glacier Tongue on the coast of Victoria Land, Antarctica. Location The Whitmer Peninsula is on the west coast of the Ross Sea. Kohler Head is on its northeast coast. It is south of the Cheetham Ice Tongue and Lamplugh Island, east of the Davis Glacier and north of the Harbord Glacier, which flows between Starr Nunatak and Varney Nunatak into the sea, where it forms the Harbord Glacier Tongue. Exploration and naming The Whitmer Peninsula was mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and United States Navy air photos, 1957–62. It was named by the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant (j.g.) R.D. Whitmer, U.S. Navy, who wintered over at Williams Field, McMurdo Sound, in 1956. Mary Mussleman Whitmer
Mary Elsa Musselman Whitmer (August 27, 1778 – January 1856) was a Book of Mormon witness and the wife of Peter Whitmer Sr. Biography She was born Mary Elsa Musselman in Germany to Jacob and Elizabeth Musselman. She immigrated to Pennsylvania in the late-18th century, where she met and married Peter Whitmer, a farmer, also of German descent. They moved to Waterloo, New York, in the year of 1809, and later purchased a farm in Fayette, New York. They had eight children, Christian Whitmer, Jacob Whitmer, John Whitmer, David Whitmer, Catherine Whitmer Page, Peter Whitmer Jr., Nancy Whitmer, and Elizabeth Whitmer Cowdery. Through her son David, she and her family became acquainted with Joseph Smith around 1828. Whitmer High School is a public high school in Toledo, Ohio, named for John Wallace Whitmer, an educator who helped organize high school classes for the area. Whitmer History, accessed January 25, 2013. It is the only high school in the Washington Local School District in Lucas County, Ohio, serving the northwest section of Toledo up to the Michigan state line. Jacob Whitmer
Jacob Whitmer (February 2, 1800 – April 21, 1856) was the second born child of Peter Whitmer, Sr., and Mary Musselman. He is primarily remembered as one of the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon's golden plates. Biography Born in Pennsylvania, Whitmer moved with his parents to New York, where he married Elizabeth Schott on September 29, 1825. Whitmer and Elizabeth had nine children together, only three of whom survived to adulthood. Whitmer’s younger brother, David, became a close associate of Joseph Smith. In June 1829, Jacob Whitmer joined his brothers in signing a statement testifying that he personally saw and handled the golden plates said to be in Smith's possession. Gretchen Whitmer
Gretchen Esther Whitmer (; born August 23, 1971) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 49th governor of Michigan since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015. Whitmer was born and raised in Michigan. She graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in communication in 1993 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1998.
