Viborg () is a city in central Jutland, Denmark, the capital of both Viborg municipality and Region Midtjylland. Viborg is also the seat of the Western High Court, the Courts of Denmark, High Court for the Jutland peninsula. Viborg Municipality () is a municipality ( Danish, '' kommune'') in Region Midtjylland on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 1,421.04 km2, and has a population of 97,621 (1. January 2025). Søren Pape Poulsen was chosen as mayor again for a second term of office 2014–17, but before the first year of his second term had passed, he accepted an offer to become chairman of his party, and a new mayor had to be chosen among the municipal council members. Viborg Stadion, currently known as Energi Viborg Arena for sponsorship reasons, is the home of Danish Superliga club Viborg FF with a capacity of 10,000. Originally built in 1931, it previously hosted the Danish national women's football team between 2015 until 2024. Vyborg (; , ; , ; , ) is a town and the administrative center of Vyborgsky District in Leningrad Oblast, Russia. Viipuri Province was a historical province of Finland from 1812 to 1945. History The predecessor of the province was Vyborg Governorate, which was established in 1744 from territories ceded by the Swedish Empire to Russia in 1721 ( Treaty of Nystad) and in 1743 (Treaty of Åbo). Erik Nissen Viborg (5 April 1759 – 25 September 1822) was a Danish veterinarian and botanist. Early life and education Viborg was born on 5 April 1759 in , Sønderjylland, the son of parish priest Carl Viborg (1706–82) and Marie Sophie Friis (1721–89). He was taught privately by his father at home. In 1777 he enrolled at the University of Copenhagen where he initially studied theology and Oriental languages. After three years, he gave up the study of theology and turned to the study of physics, mathematics and natural history. His studies of natural history introduced him to who endorsed him to pursue a career in veterinary sciences. After a year of study at the Sankt Annæ Gade#History, Cetenary School in Christianshavn, Viborg was employed as an assistant teacher with an annual salary of 200 Danish rigsdaler.
