Tranmere is an eastern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Campbelltown. History The name ''Tranmere'' was given in 1838 to Section 273 of 67 acres by its purchaser David Wylie, who named it after his hometown of Tranmere, Cheshire in England. David Wylie M.A. (ca.1799 – 8 March 1853), who ran a school on the property, was a brother-in law of William Scott MLC, who purchased an adjoining property. Tranmere Post Office opened on 3 February 1947, but was renamed ''Kensington Gardens North'' in 1966. Demographics The 2006 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 3,218 persons in Tranmere on census night. Of these, 47.8% were male and 52.2% were female. The majority of residents (68.4%) were of Australian birth, with 5.0%being born in Italy, and 4.4% in England. Tranmere Oil Terminal
Tranmere Oil Terminal is situated on the River Mersey, south of Birkenhead. It was opened on 8 June 1960 to handle vessels of up to 65,000 tons, at two berths (North and South). It is connected to the Stanlow Oil Refinery by a crude oil pipeline and a fuel oil pipeline. Part of the terminal occupies the site of a former ferry service to Liverpool, with the extant pier considerably modified. The terminal is operated by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company. History The terminal was built jointly by Shell Oil, then the owner of Stanlow Oil Refinery, and the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board at a cost of £6 million. It was built to replace the role of the Herculaneum Dock and the later Eastham Oil Terminal which had only been inaugurated in 1954, but which did not have sufficient water depth to handle the 65,000 ton vessels that were operating by 1960. Tranmere Railway Station
Tranmere was a railway station on the Chester and Birkenhead Railway in Cheshire, England. It opened in 1846 and closed in 1857 and consisted of two platforms (only one up to 1847). It originally opened as Lime Kiln Lane and was later renamed as St. Paul's Road, finally changing to Tranmere in 1853. On 22 July 1847 the railway became part of the Birkenhead, Lancashire and Cheshire Junction Railway. The company doubled the track, which up to this time had been single track.
